Women's Basketball Stumbles on the Road Against Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on the road versus Cornell, 68-56. Senior Terese McMahon led the Duhawks with eleven points and added six rebounds. Sierra Biso led the Cornell offense with 14 points.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • Cyerra Hutchins gets the Duhawks started off strong, converting on a pair of three-point plays in the first half of the quarter. 
  • With 1:57 to play, McMahon draws the first of two fouls, converting on all four free-throw attempts, opening a 17-12 lead for the Duhawks. Loras finished the quarter 8-for-8 from the line.

Second Quarter
  • The Rams used the first quarter intermission to change gears firing back with an 11-0 run, erasing the seven-point deficit. 
  • Cornell continued to build off the momentum and closed the half with a 6-0 run, with four points by Diamond Boyd, taking a 31-23 lead to the locker room.

Third Quarter
  • Senior Erin Weaver appeared to spark the offense to start the second half, scoring a quick four points.
  • Cornell maintained control of the game and converted on back-to-back three-point plays, reestablishing the 11-point advantage at 49-38 with less than one minute to play in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
  • Strong defense from junior Miranda Chapman, followed by a made 3-pointer from junior Addie Oberman, coupled with a block from Obendorf shifted the momentum back to the Duhawks midway through the fourth.
  • Loras cut the deficit to 12 with 5:15 to play, but the Rams remained firm in their defense and shot-making, converting from the free-throw line to seal the win.

The senior has earned player of the game honors for the second straight outing, finishing with 11 points and going 5-of-6 from the line.

UP NEXT
Loras continue the non-conference schedule on the road on Tuesday against Wheaton. In last year's meeting, the Thunder earned a 67-64 win inside the Athletic and Wellness Center. Wheaton is coming off a 81-68 victory over Trine. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
