Late Comeback for Men's Basketball Falls Short

RIPON, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's basketball fell to 2-2 on the season after Saturday's 105-100 loss to Ripon. Senior Justin VanWambeke and sophomore Ryan DiCanio combined for 49 of Loras' 100 points on the night. DiCanio also added 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
  • With 13:50 remaining in the half, VanWambeke put Loras up by four with a shot from behind-the-arc on an assist by freshman Matt Dacy-Seijo. 
  • The Red Hawks converted on two straight Duhawk turnovers, capitalizing with a 4-0 run to open a 20-19 lead. 
  • Three Loras fouls in less than a minute provided Ripon with opportunities at the line and went 5-for-6 to open a 28-21 lead.
  • Junior DeAndre Williams brought to Duhawks even, sinking a pair of jumpers with assists from sophomore Demond George. 
  • With two minutes left in the half, Ripon drained a pair of 3-point shots to open a 50-44 lead.
  • VanWambeke cut the deficit to five with his money ball with 13 seconds remaining in the half, sending the Duhawks to the locker room trailing by five.

Second Half
  • Sophomore Demond George tied the game for Loras with a 3-pointer on an assist by VanWambeke with 18:56 remaining.
  • The Duhawks opened the second half on a tear, scoring 10 straight points to take a 56-51 lead.
  • Ripon responds with a five point run of their own after Loras was whistled for four fouls in the first five minutes
  • Eight straight points from Red Hawks' Ty Sabin gives Ripon a nine-point lead with 2:50 left in regulation.
  • The Duhawks trailed by as many as 11 with 93 seconds left on the clock, but persistent defense and clutch free-throw shooting kept Loras in contention down the stretch.
  • With 13 seconds left, a pair of free-throws from VanWambeke cut the Ripon lead to two, but Ripon's Ty Sabin converted on 3-of-4 from the line to seal the win for the Red Hawks.

The sophomore tied his career-high of 21 points on Saturday while adding 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists. DiCanio went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and shot 6-of-11 from the floor. 

UP NEXT
The Duhawks return home this Wednesday for their Iowa Conference opener versus Luther. In their last two meetings, the Duhawks have defeated the Norse by a margin of 18 and 23 points. Tip-off on Wednesday is scheduled for 8 p.m. from Lillis Court inside the Athletic & Wellness Center.
