Women's Basketball Snaps Out of Funk Against Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's basketball team snapped a two-game skid on Saturday with a resounding 69-50 win over UW-Platteville. Senior Kat Cabrera finished with 15 points to lead the Duhawks while fellow seniors Terese McMahon and Lori Obendorf chipped in 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • Loras opened an early 8-2 lead on the Pioneers, capped by a 3-pointer from junior Addie Oberman with 7:30 to play in the opening quarter.
  • UW-Platteville responded with a 12-6 run to level the game at 14-all after a 3-pointer from Blair Lutes.
  • The Duhawks struggled to find a rhythm on offense, which in turn aided the Pioneers in opening a 21-16 lead with less than a minute to play.
  • Junior Miranda Chapman quickly answered with a trey of her own to bring the first quarter to a close with UW-Platteville in front 21-19.
  • McMahon scored all seven of her first half points in the opening quarter, going 3-of-4 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line.

Second Quarter
  • Trailing 27-21 at the media timeout, Loras came out of the break and shook the less than stellar start, beginning with a 3-pointer from Cabrera.
  • What ensued was a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes of play, resulting in a 38-32 Duhawk lead at halftime.
  • Loras out-rebounded UW-Platteville in the second quarter by nine and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Cabrera scored seven of her 15 points on the night in the second quarter.
  • Obendorf pushed the Duhawks into the lead with layups on back-to-back trips to the paint.

Third Quarter
  • The momentum that the Duhawks built in the second quarter carried over the halftime break as Loras continued to execute and extend the lead.
  • Most of the Duhawks' success in the third quarter didn't come from traditional field goals, but rather their ability to get to the line, converting on 10-of-12 chances.
  • Defensively, Loras held the Pioneers to 2-of-16 shooting in the quarter, in turn, opening a 17-point lead going into the final frame.

Fourth Quarter
  • The Duhawks' largest lead of the day came after a layup from Oberman with 3:24 to play, which put Loras ahead by 24 at 67-43.
  • Sophomore Kennedy Wohlford asserted her dominance in the glass with five of her seven rebounds coming in the fourth quarter. As a team, the Duhawks held a plus-17 margin in the rebound column, with 16 of the 38 rebounds coming on the offensive end of the court.

STAT TO KNOW
Loras dominated the paint, outscoring UW-Platteville 38-18. The Duhawks scored 10 points in the paint in each quarter except for the final frame.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Cyerra Hutchins |
Despite not reaching double-digits on offense, Hutchins' all-around play was superb for the Duhawks on Saturday. The junior college transfer registered nine rebounds, six assists, five points, three blocks and two steals, impacting every facet of the win for Loras.

UP NEXT
The Duhawks open conference play on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's Iowa Conference Tournament Championship against Luther. An early season drought has the Norse staring at a 1-3 record before Monday's non-conference contest against Alverno.
