DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's basketball team fell in their Iowa Conference opener to Luther on Wednesday evening, 68-63. Senior
Terese McMahon led the Duhawks with a season-high 19 points.Â
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
- The Duhawks started the game with strong defensive play, forcing three straight Norse turnovers to take a 6-5 lead, four of which came from McMahon.
- Luther quickly turned the tide, opening a 6-1 run, capped by a jumper from Katie Waller with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Second Quarter
- Four straight points from Luther's Sarah Holtz gave the Norse an early 15-11 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter.Â
- At 5:59, sophomore Reagan Friend lifted her side to their first lead of the quarter at 16-15 with a 3-pointer for her only points of the evening.
- With 3:09 remaining in the quarter, McMahon reached the double-digit mark after drawing a foul and going 2-for-2 from the line, giving the Duhawks a 22-21 lead. Â
- Before the half was through, Luther capitalized on two Loras turnovers, regaining a four-point lead heading into halftime after a 5-0 run to end the quarter.
Third Quarter
- Junior Cyerra Hutchins scored five straight points for the Duhawks, including one three-point shot, pushing Loras in front at 31-30.Â
- Senior Kat Cabrera followed up Hutchins' three with one of her own with 5:40 left in the third for a 34-31 lead.Â
- Hutchins came up big again for the Duhawks, as the Cedar Rapids native hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter, pulling Loras to within one at 40-39.Â
Fourth Quarter
- The Norse opened a 13-point lead with 7:37 remaining in regulation thanks to a 3-pointer from Luther's Waller, who finished the night with a game-high 21 points.Â
- With 6:16 remaining in regulation, McMahon forced a Norse turnover and scored on the fast-break off the give-and-go from junior Miranda Chapman.Â
- Four straight points from McMahon pulled Loras within seven at 62-55 with 5:28 remaining in the quarter.Â
- Junior Miranda Chapman hit a 3-pointer with 3:54 left in regulation, prompting a timeout from Luther.Â
- The Norse forced two-straight Loras turnovers and made it hurt, scoring on both possessions to maintain the upper hand down the stretch.

Loras continue's the Iowa Conference portion of the schedule on the road versus crosstown rival, Dubuque, this Saturday. Last season, the Duhawks split regular season meetings with the Spartans, falling at home while winning on the road. Dubuque comes into Saturday's game at 2-4 on the season after losing to Buena Vista on Wednesday, 108-77. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center.
