Duhawks Fall in Championship Game to Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's basketball team fell Friday evening, 72-60 in the championship of the Baldwin Wallace Holiday Invitational. The Duhawks were challenged by undefeated hosts, as the Yellow Jackets capitalized on 12 made 3-pointers on the night. Seniors Terese McMahon and Lori Obendorf led Loras with 18 and 17 points, respectively.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • Two straight 3-pointers from the Yellow Jackets gave Baldwin Wallace an early 6-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Reagan Friend entered the game and created back-to-back plays for the Duhawks, first on defense then on the offensive side of the ball. The Gilbert, Ariz. native rebounded her own missed 3-pointer and was fouled on the putback. Friend hit her free throw to cut Baldwin Wallace's lead to 10 at 16-7 with 1:50 remaining in the quarter. 

Second Quarter
  • Loras' offense picked up halfway through the quarter as the Duhawks nailed two shots from downtown from juniors Lauren Stanich and Miranda Chapman
  • After scoring only seven points in the first quarter, Loras offense elevated to shoot 50 percent from the floor through the second quarter while forcing a 33.3 shooting percent from the Yellow Jackets. 

Third Quarter
  • The Duhawks converted back-to-back defensive stops into a McMahon scoring opportunity as the senior weaved through defenders, making it to the rim and putting up two points. 
  • McMahon kept rolling for the Duhawks as the Lindenhurst, Ill. native scored Loras' first eight points of the quarter, shooting 3-of-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. 

Fourth Quarter
  • Baldwin Wallace capitalized on an early Duhawk turnover for the eighth 3-pointer and a 53-37 lead. 
  • A deep jumper from junior Addie Oberman pulled the Duhawks within 11 with 8:39 remaining in regulation. 
  • The Yellow Jackets gained their biggest lead of the night at 18 points after turning a a Loras turnover into a 4-0 run. 
  • Loras came within 10 points of the Yellow Jackets after a 8-0 scoring run, including 3-pointers from Friend and Oberman as well as a steal and jumper from senior Erin Weaver

The senior posted another strong offensive game for the Duhawks, scoring 17 points while shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the line. Obendorf also added eight rebounds and two blocks. 

BALDWIN WALLACE HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM
Lori Obendorf | Senior | Naperville, Ill. | Center | 40 points, 24 rebounds
Obendorf started the tournament strong, posting a career-high 23 points versus La Roche while adding 16 rebounds. The Naperville, Ill. native followed up her career night this time posting 17 points and 8 rebounds. 
Terese McMahon | Senior | Lindenhurst, Ill.  | Forward | 35 points, 9 rebounds
Along with Obendorf, McMahon also had back-to-back double-digit scoring nights. McMahon  posted 17 points against La Roche and 18 versus Baldwin Wallace including scoring eight of the Duhawks 14 points in the third quarter. 

UP NEXT
Loras heads back into Iowa Conference play as the Duhawks travel to Waverly, Iowa to take on Wartburg. Heading into the contest, Loras sits at 0-3 in Iowa Conference play while Wartbubrg is atop the conference standings at 3-0. The Duhawks and Knights are set to tip off at 6 p.m. from Levick Arena on on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
