Duhawks Sunk by Fourth Quarter Wartburg Rally

WAVERLY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Despite a career-night from junior Addie Oberman, the Loras women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with No. 9 Wartburg on Wednesday in Iowa Conference action, falling 73-55. Oberman finished with a season-high 16 points to lead the Duhawks.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • Senior Lori Obendorf was ready from the opening whistle, winning the tip and recording her first block of the night on Wartburg's first possession.
  • With 8:30 left in the quarter, junior Addie Oberman forced a turnover from the Knights and delivered the pass to Hutchins for the easy layup in transition.
  • Oberman's hot-hand continued with a 3-pointer after a denial from Obendorf on the opposite end of the court.
  • The Duhawks closed the opening quarter on a 4-0 run with baskets from Obendorf and Oberman.

Second Quarter
  • Wartburg used the break in action to shore up its offense and benefited from a 6-2 run in the first three minutes.
  • Six of Loras' eight first half turnovers came in the second quarter, resulting in eight points for the Knights.
  • After trading 6-0 runs, Wartburg closed the half with a 3-0 run from the free-throw line, cutting Loras' lead to one at 27-26.

Third Quarter
  • Trailing 34-32 with 7:34 to play in the third, Wartburg opened a six-point lead thanks to an 8-0 run. 
  • A 5-0 run courtesy of Oberman and senior Terese McMahon cut the Knights' lead to one at 42-41 with 2:57 remaining.
  • Wartburg held a 7-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter
  • The Knights turned a four-point lead into a 10 point lead in the first 2:30 of the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Katie Sommer.
  • Loras managed to halt the run with a layup from McMahon, but the Duhawks were unable to string together multiple possessions and witnessed the game begin to slip away.
  • For the last 5:49, Wartburg held a 10-plus point lead, extending it to as many as 20 after a layup with 14 seconds remaining.

In her first career start for the Duhawks, Oberman led the Loras effort with 16 points and five assists, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor while adding six rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Duhawks return to Lillis Court for the first time since Dec. 19 for an IIAC tilt against Simpson. On Wednesday, the Storm defeated Nebraska Wesleyan,  65-62 to improve to 4-8 and 1-2 in conference play. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from inside the Athletic & Wellness Center.
