Brad Schwind had a career day on the mound for the Loras baseball team, throwing seven innings and striking out 12 as the Duhawks won 9-5 over Elmhurst on Sunday. Senior
Adrian Nunez drove in three runs on two hits, one of which came on a double in the top of the fifth.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS - After Loras went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, Elmhurst capitalized on a Duhawk fielding error, plating the first run of the game on a RBI single with two outs.
- The Duhawks wasted no time in getting the run back, striking for two hits in the top of the second and capitalized on two Bluejay throwing errors.
- Senior Lucas Jacque led off the inning with a single to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nunez.
- Schwind set Elmhurst down in order in the bottom of the second, recording two of his 12 strikeouts on the day.
- In the third, Loras struck for three hits and two runs, highlighted by a rocket from Jacque to the base of the center field wall, scoring junior Tony Heiser easily from third.
- Sophomore Ryan Koester drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Patrick Walsh.
- The Duhawks broke open the game in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits with the help of another Elmhurst error.
- A pair of doubles from Koester and Nunez highlighted the inning.
- When the dust settled, Loras found itself ahead 8-1 and had Schwind operating on high octane, having allowed one hit through his first four innings while striking out six.
- The Bluejays finally got their offense operational in the bottom of the eighth, reeling off four hits and three runs.
- Sophomore Nick Spiess weathered the storm and limited the damage, striking out two of the last three batters of the inning.
- Two more runs came across to score for Elmhurst in the ninth before sophomore Robert Hovey came into end the threat and preserve the 9-5 win.
