Softball Drops Twin Bill to UW-Stevens Point and Colby

CLERMONT, Fla. (Duhawks.com) -  The Loras softball team suffered a tough two losses to UW- Stevens Point and Colby on Tuesday. First, the Duhawks fell 8-4 to the Pointers followed by a nine-inning 7-6 loss to the Mules.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • In game one UW-Stevens Point had no trouble getting on base, but the Duhawks were effective in making sure they did not score. The Pointers had six batters left on base in the first three innings.
  • Offensively, the Duhawks were the first to bring in a run. Senior Julie Kistner's two-RBI double scored freshman Hannah Towns and sophomore Regan Wolverton in the second inning to lead 2-0.
  • UW-Stevens Point responded in the top of the third as Uhlenbrauck scored on a sacrifice fly to close the gap, 3-1.
  • The Pointers began their scoring run with a three-run fifth inning, which began with a bases loaded walk to the Pointers' Charlotte Pegram.
  • The rally continued for UW-Stevens Point as Paige Kitzing hit a two-RBI single to increase the Pointer's lead to 4-2.
  • This scoring trend continued in the sixth inning as UW-Stevens Point scored four runs on two hits and two errors to lead 8-2 entering the bottom of the sixth.
  • Unable to capitalize on junior Jess Newton's single to right center, the Duhawks executed an effective defensive performance in the top of the seventh to hold the Pointers from scoring.
  • Junior Dani Stromert caught two fly outs in center field and Towns caught one in left to end the inning quickly.
  • Freshman Shannon Coyle and Newton's RBIs in the seventh were not enough to erase the deficit, falling 8-4.
  • The burst of offensive success the Duhawks displayed in the final inning of game one carried over into game two as the bats were exploding in the first two innings.
  • Stromert began the first inning with a walk followed by a bunt single from freshman Megan Larson. Then, senior Makaila Haase smacked one over the fence to give the Duhawks an early 3-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, Coyle reached on a fielder's choice allowing freshman Nicole Majewski to score followed by Stromert advancing home on the throw, giving Loras a 5-0 lead after two.
  • Colby cut into the Duhawk lead in the third, scoring three runs on a hit and an error.
  • Limited hits on both sides allowed the Duhawks to maintain their lead. Then, in the sixth inning, Haase homered for the second time in the game, sending the long ball over the wall in center field, extending the Loras lead to four at 6-2.
  • The Mules refused to go quietly, converting five hits into four runs in the sixth, tying the game 6-all.
  • Neither team was able to score a run in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
  • The game followed the international tiebreaker rules, which placed a runner at second base at the beginning of each half inning.
  • After a scoreless ninth inning, a RBI single by Colby's Sansone scored the runner from second and lifted the Mules to the 7-6 win.
