Baseball Drops Opening Doubleheader to Coe

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras baseball team dropped the first two games of its Iowa Conference doubleheader to Coe on Friday by scores of 10-5 and 8-3. Junior Nolan Ritter led the way offensively in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. Game two was led by Thomas Johnson who went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

 
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Patrick Walsh was tagged with his third loss of the season, allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs over the course of five innings on the mound.
  • Walsh was relieved by sophomore Patrick Moriarty who pitched two innings of relief. Moriarty allowed four hits and two earned runs.
  • Craig Konrardy got things started for Coe with a bang, leading off the game with a home run to left center.
  • It didn't take long for Loras to respond with senior Lucas Jacque singling home junior Tony Heiser in the home half of the first.
  • Loras took a 3–1 lead in the bottom of the second, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Heise, scoring junior Luke Leibforth. Freshman Austin Konagel added a single to score Ritter from third.
  • Konagel wasn't done there however, driving in his second run of the game in the fourth inning to give Loras a 4–2 advantage, once again scoring Ritter from second.
  • Coe crafted a six-hit, six-run in the sixth inning, taking an 8–4 lead.
  • Ritter singled home Johnson in the bottom of the fifth in an attempt to kickstart a rally, cutting the deficit to 8–5 in the process.
  • Sophomore Brad Schwind was tagged with his fifth loss of the season, allowing five runs to cross in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
  • Loras did their best to negate the deficit throughout the next two innings, scoring three runs.
  • The Duhawks took advantage of a Kohawk mistake to score their first run of the game, with Konagel scoring on a throwing error.
  • Senior Adrian Nunez tallied his 11th RBI of the season in the fourth inning, singling home Jacque on the first pitch he saw.
  • Coe added three more runs to finish the game, led by Konrardy's second home run of the series.

 
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Heiser went 3-for-7 on the day raising his season batting average to .333.
  • Ritter broke out of an 0-for-13 slump to hit 3-for-4 in game one, raising his batting average back up to .307. It was his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Johnson continued his strong hitting effort during conference play, now standing at 12-for-23 (.521) since April 9.
  • Konagel has shown why he's been a consistent starter since the Buena Vista series, hitting a scalding 10-for-24 with three RBIs and four two-hit games.
  • Moriarty has shown promise as a long-reliever in previous weeks, throwinga season-high six innings across two games on Friday showcasing his potential to start in the future.
  • Since being converted from catcher, freshman Tyler Tomaka turned in his best outing from the mound yet, striking out two in his lone inning of work.

 
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Nolan Ritter | Ritter broke out in a big way during game one of Friday's double-header. The sophomore left behind a 0-for-13 slump to hit 3-for-4 with two stolen bases. His base running was instrumental in the third and fourth runs scored by the Duhawks.
Thomas Johnson | Johnson continued to torture opposing pitchers in conference play, finishing game two 2-for-3 with a walk. The junior is now hitting .521 in his last three conference series.
