Baseball Drops Pair to Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras baseball team dropped their first two games of the Iowa Conference season on Saturday, losing to Buena Vista by final scores of 7-4 and 6-4. Sophomore Ryan Koester led the Duhawks on the offensive end, hitting the teams' first two home runs of the season, with one in each game. With the pair of losses, Loras drops to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in Iowa Conference action.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Patrick Walsh played a major role in both games, combining to hit 3-for-7, scoring a run in game one while driving one home in the second half of the doubleheader.
  • In game two, Walsh doubled to left field, scoring freshman Danny Paluch who reached on an error. The double was his lone hit of the game.
  • Koester drove in a total of four runs on the day, all coming via the long ball by the sophomore. His first four-bagger came in the top of the seventh to cut Buena Vista's lead to three.
  • In total, Koester finished the day 3-of-9 with four RBIs and two home runs.
  • Koester extended his on-base streak to 11 games and his hitting streak to nine games.
  • Senior Lucas Jacque's hitting streak reached 11 games with his 1-for-4 performance in game one, but came to an end in game two, as he was held hitless.
  • Senior Adrian Nunez recorded the only other extra base hit of game one, collecting a double in the second inning. The senior completed a solid day at the plate by going 1-for-2 with an RBI in game two.
  • Nunez's double set up a sacrifice situation for sophomore Danny Weis, who drove home junior Thomas Johnson from third.
  • In game one, senior Kyle Hoffman saw the mound for the first time in two years after missing time to injury. Hoffman tossed two clean innings and allowed one hit after relieving senior Alex Steines.
  • Sophomore Brad Schwind struggled with the long ball on the mound in game two, but continued his strikeout success by sending nine Beavers down on strikes.
  • Sophomore Aidan Wojciehowski relieved Schwind by pitching 1 2/3 of perfect baseball. Wojciehowski turned in his best performance of the season by striking out four of the five batters he faced.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Ryan Koester | Koester had a hand in four of the Duhawks' eight runs on the day, driving in all four by way of home run. The sophomore finished the day hitting 3-for-9 with a home run in each game. Koester extended his on-base streak to 11, a mark which currently leads the team.
