Baseball Settles for Split with Spartans at Home

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras baseball team split with the University of Dubuque Spartans on Tuesday with each team earning victories in exciting fashion. Following Tuesday's doubleheader the Duhawks moved to 9–17 overall, with a 3–13 record in Iowa Conference action. Loras defeated the Spartans by a final score of 4–3 in game one, before the Spartans bested the Duhawks 8–4 in game two. The Duhawks were largely led by strong pitching performances from senior Patrick Walsh and sophomore Brad Schwind.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Walsh earned his third victory on the bump, throwing six innings, while allowing six hits and two earned runs. The senior struck out four, his second most of the season.
  • Walsh was relieved by senior Alex Steines who worked in relief duty for the first time in 2016. Steines pitched one inning, receiving credit for the save, which was the first of his career.
  • Four Duhawks recorded multi-hit contests in game one, led by freshman Danny Paluch.
  • Paluch finished game one 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. His two-RBI single in the sixth inning provided Loras with the go-ahead runs.
  • Senior Lucas Jacque, junior Nolan Ritter and freshman Austin Konagel also recorded two-hit performances. Jacque recorded his first since April 10 while Ritter recorded his first since April 3.
  • Providing the initial go-ahead run in the fifth inning was junior Luke Leibforth, who singled home Paluch on a ball up the middle.
  • Game two ended in heartbreak for the Duhawks who entered the eighth inning with a 4–2 lead before surrending six runs, five of which came in the ninth innings.
  • Schwind was on the brink of a complete game, throwing 8 1/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and four walks. The sophomore struck out six batters, his most since an early conference start against Buena Vista on April 2.
  • Paluch got things started for Loras in the second, tripling home two runners to give Loras a 2–0 advantage.
  • Jacque continued his offensive outburst this season, singling home Ritter and junior Thomas Johnson to give Loras a 4–1 lead in the third inning.
  • This lead stood until the seventh inning when the Spartans began to mount their comeback.
  • Sophomore Pat Moriarty was called on from the bullpen to relieve Schwind and inherited a pair of runners on base.
  • In his only at-bat of the night, Dubuque's Tyler Lewan drove the 2–2 offering from Moriarty deep into the gap in right center for a triple to take the 5–4 lead.
  • The Spartan's Austin McWhite capped off the late-inning rally for Dubuque with his second home run of the game to extend his team's lead to 8–4.
  • Loras avoided the 1–2–3 inning in the ninth thanks to a double from senior Adrian Nunez, but that was all the offense the Purple and Gold could muster.
  • Junior Tony Heiser continued his aggressiveness on the base-paths, stretching two balls hit to right field into doubles.
  • At the end of the night, Heiser was 3-for-4 and raised his season batting average to .358.
