Duhawks Drop Pair to Luther

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras College baseball team dropped to 7-10 on the season and 1-6 in Iowa Conference action on Saturday, winning in walk-off fashion in game one before falling in games two and three.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Game one wrapped up in exciting fashion, with senior Lucas Jacque driving home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Junior Tony Heiser got the rally started with a one-out drive through the right side that he stretched into a double. After an intentional walk to senior Patrick Walsh and a groundout by sophomore Ryan Koester, Jacque came to the plate and beat out an infield single on the first pitch he saw, scoring Heiser from third and handing the Duhawks the win in game one.
  • With his game-winning RBI, Jacque finished game one 4-for-5 with five RBIs, a career-best performance from the senior. Jacque has reached base in all but two games this season.
  • Walsh entered in the ninth inning of game one and pitched a scoreless inning to earn his second win of the season.
  • This relief appearance set Walsh up to start game two in which he pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out two.
  • Walsh was touched up for five runs in the first two innings before settling down and pitching three clean innings.
  • Walsh was relieved by senior Kyle Hoffman who made his second appearance of the season tossing two scoreless innings, striking out one.
  • Hoffman has now pitched four scoreless innings this season after having not pitched for Loras in two years.
  • In game two, the Duhawk offense was led by freshman Austin Konagel and juniors Tony Heiser and Thomas Johnson.
  • Konagel provided the most exciting play of the day, driving a 1–1 pitch to the deepest part of Petrakis Park and over the head of Luther's Alex Weber in center.
  • Konagel attempted to turn his triple into an inside-the-park home run, but was tagged out at the plate. Konagel finished the game going 2-for-3 with a RBI triple.
  • Heiser put together one of his best offensive performances of the season, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Both of Heiser's RBIs came in the bottom of the seventh of game two, giving Loras life in the final frame.
  • Johnson had cooled down a bit since a hot week in Florida, but the junior turned in two of the best performances of his career on Saturday, finishing the day 6-for-6 from the plate with a double.
  • Sophomore Ryan Koester's 14-game on-base streak came to an end on Saturday with the West Chicago native finishing the day 0-for-7.
  • Sophomore Brad Schwind stared the final game of the day, tossing a seven-inning complete game.
  • Schwind held the Norse in check early before allowing four runs in the final four innings of his outing. The sophomore allowed eight hits, four earned runs and walked two.
  • Schwind struck out five Norse batters giving him 34 strike outs on the season which leads the team.
  • Konagel finished game three of the day 1-for-3 at the plate, but made several stellar defensive plays at second base to prevent extra Norse baserunners.
