ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Duhawks.com) - The No. 12 Loras women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday night to No. 21 Augustana, 2–1. For the second consecutive match, junior
Sydney Wright struck gold from the penalty spot to give Loras the lead heading into halftime. However, two second half strikes from the Vikings propelled them to the 2–1 win. With this loss, the Duhawks fall to 4–1–0 on the year.
FIRST HALF
- Anna Fank for Augustana got the attack going in the fifth minute when she had the ball on the near sideline and crossed it into the box where one of her teammates was racing towards it. Senior Maria Siebels smelled trouble and eliminated the opportunity by sliding to secure the loose ball.
- The Loras defense got careless with the ball in the back and it turned into a scoring chance for the Vikings by way of a free kick towards the near sideline. The ball was served into the box where it found the head of Sammi Farkos who headed her shot wide past far post.
- In the 19th minute with Loras pressuring deep in the Vikings end, the Augustana attempted to clear the ball, but it fell right to junior Riley O'Neill. The Waterloo, Iowa native had her original shot blocked, but the deflection landed on the head of sophomore Elizabeth Mills who headed a shot over the keeper and just wide of the far post.
- Mills continued in the offensive attack by delivering a shot on the near side outside the box. Her shot was blocked by a Vikings defender in the box by way of her hand and the head referee signaled for a penalty. Wright walked in from the back and put Loras ahead 1–0.
- Augustana nearly found the equalizer when a cross from the near sideline was served into the box. The ball bounced around until it fell to Sammi Farkos who put her shot from the penalty spot over the bar.
SECOND HALF
- Loras nearly doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Mills played a though ball to freshman Emily Robinson in the box. Robinson ran onto it and hit a shot inside the near post with Bailey Bradford getting an outstretched hand on it and after deflecting off the post, junior Maura Walsh was unable to clean up the rebound on the doorstep.
- Loras earned a throw in during the 64th minute and after bouncing around Mills jumped on the loose ball hitting it far post and in for a goal. The Loras field players started to celebrate, but the assistant referee on the sideline called for offsides on Loras, nullifying the goal.
- Augustana found the equalizer in the 67th minute when Bri Frys took a free kick on the near sideline. The service found Sammi Farkos, who headed her shot past an approaching Siebels.
- 11 minutes later, the Vikings struck again when a cross from Andria Serra fell to an unmarked Jessa Rizzo who delievered the winner by flicking her shot to the far post over an outstretched Siebels, giving Augustana the 2–1 lead.
- Riley O'Neill took a free kick in the 81st minute that was served deep into the box, but Bailey Bradford climbed the ladder and snatched the ball out of the air.
- The Duhawks earned a corner in the 84th minute and Schutz crossed her ball into the box, but before it could be found by a teammate, the Vikings cleared it away to keep the score 2–1.
- Walsh had a chance to tie the game in the 87th minute off a throw in from Schutz. The throw came into the corner of the box and after being knocked around, Walsh claimed possession and hit a shot near post where Bailey Bradford was there to save it.
- With 35 seconds left on the clock, Loras received a throw in and Schutz threw a long ball into the box. The ball ping-ponged around with Loras trying to direct a shot on net, but they could not convert leaving the score at 2–1 as time expired.
KEY STATS
Through the first four matches the Duhawks have been out-shot in each contest. Tuesday night, though, Loras had the upper hand in shots with 11 registered for Loras compared to four for Augustana.

Gretchen Schutz I The forward throughout the match created many scoring opportunities for Loras up top. Her ability to turn a throw in into essentially a corner, created a multitude of chances in the last 10 minutes of the match for Loras to find the equalizer.
