Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 21 Women's Soccer Edged by Titans

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The No. 21 Loras women's soccer team suffered their second consecutive defeat on Thursday night to UW-Oshkosh, 1–0. A shot from distance by Alek Kleis bounced up and into the top-corner in the 55th minute, which proved to be the difference in the match. The Duhawks registered 26 shots, including nine on target, but as a result, suffered their first shutout of the season.

FIRST HALF
  • Loras controlled the half offensively, recording 15 shots to the Titans' four. The first shot for the Duhawks occurred in the third minute when junior Gretchen Schutz played a through ball to sophomore Elizabeth Mills on a breakaway. Mills' shot beat the keeper, but was denied by the far post.
  • The Duhawks earned a throw-in during the 25th minute on the near sideline. Mills collected inside the 18 but her shot sailed wide of the near post.
  • Another Schutz throw in the 30th minute led to an opportunity for Loras and it bounced freely inside the box and fell to junior Stephanie Harepenau, who directed the bouncing ball on net that was saved by Titan goalkeeper Jessica Galason.
  • Loras earned a corner in the 40th minute and the service found the head of senior Hanna Burgmeier, but her shot was blocked away before Galason could put a hand on it.
  • Alek Kleis created the Titans best opportunity in the final minute of the opening half, firing a shot from 30 yards out that sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Loyo had to jump up and snare to save.

SECOND HALF
  • Loras nearly got on the board when Mills turned her defender on the near sideline in the 54th minute and served a ball far post that Schutz headed towards goal, but she did not get enough power on her shot and was saved easily.
  • The Titans pressure on the Loras back line led to a failed clearance from the Duhawks in the 55th minute. Alek Kleis jumped on the loose from 40 yards out and directed a shot that bounced in front of Loyo and over her outstretched arms, putting UW-Oshkosh in front, 1–0.
  • Kleis nearly doubled the Titans lead when she had the ball at the corner of the box and hit a dipping shot near-post that Loyo had to cover to keep the Titans from increasing their lead.
  • Schutz' free kick in the 65th was sent on goal and had Galason beat, but couldn't quite tuck it under the crossbar.
  • UW-Oshkosh earned consecutive corners in the 73rd and 74th minute, but Loras cleared both chances to avoid further damage.
  • A free kick for Loras in the 83rd minute found the head of Burgmeier directly in front of goal, but Galason made a diving stop to her left to push it wide of goal.
  • Schutz and Burgmeier connected on a corner kick once again in the 86th minute, but this time the header went wide, leaving the Duhawks with limited time to find the equalizer.

KEY STAT
Loras had the upper hand in shots Thursday night with an advantage of 26 to 12 for the match and a 15–4 edge in the first half. This early pressure led to many scoring opportunities for the Duhawks, but in the end, they were unable to capitalize.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Elizabeth Mills I The sophomore was seemingly all over the pitch with an extra pep in her step Thursday night, recording nine shots for the home team. Her pressure on the Titans back line created chances for herself and her teammates.
