No. 21 Women's Soccer Opens IIAC with 4-0 Win

LINCOLN, NEB. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team (5-2-0, 1-0-0 IIAC) opened conference play on Sunday with a 4–0 win over Nebraska Wesleyan (4-6-0, 0-1-0 IIAC). The Duhawks were paced by junior Gretchen Schutz's second-half brace, who also added an assist on the opening tally. Senior Maria Siebels returned to goal, stopping both shots on goal she saw to record her fourth clean sheet of the season.

FIRST HALF
  • Loras put on the pressure from the opening kickoff and it earned them multiple quality scoring opportunities.
  • In the fifth minute, sophomore Elizabeth Mills played a through ball to junior Lauren Bolnius who reached the loose ball at the top of the box and after a one-on-one with the keeper, struck her shot inches wide of the far post.
  • Nebraska Wesleyan got in on the action and earned a free kick on the near sideline. On the ensuing set piece, the Prairie Wolves failed to capitalize as it went untouched.
  • In the 23rd minute, a corner from Nebraska Wesleyan was sent into the box, but senior goalkeeper Maria Siebels was first to the ball and secured it before any damage could be done.
  • Junior Sydney Wright took possession of the ball in the attacking third in the 27th minute and served a ball into the box that was found by senior Madie Avery. Following her first touch, Avery's shot missed wide.
  • Minutes later, Avery put the Duhawks onto the scoresheet after Schutz delivered a service from 40 yards out, connecting with the head of Avery who beat the outstretched hand of the Nebraska Wesleyan keeper.
  • Loras nearly increased their lead in the 43rd minute when Walsh's free kick missed wide with her shot.

SECOND HALF
  • Freshman Emily Robinson nearly recorded her first collegiate goal when a Schutz free kick knocked around in the box and then fell to the feet of Robinson. Her volleyed shot missed high over the crossbar.
  • After a failed clearance by Nebraska Wesleyan, Schutz jumped on the loose ball and with her second touch fired a right-footed shot that beat the keeper top-corner to give Loras the 2-0 lead.
  • Schutz returned to the scoresheet in the 61st minute when on a free kick, beat the keeper from 35 yards out with her shot, giving Loras the 3-0 lead.
  • Loras' last tally of the day came off the foot of junior Sydney Wright, who took a give-and-go pass from Mills at the corner of the box on the far sideline. The defender took a touch and ripped a shot that landed in the side netting on the far post perfectly, giving the Duhawks the 4–0 lead, which they ride out over the remainder of the half for the victory.
