No. 25 Men's Soccer Victorious in IIAC Lid-Lifter

LINCOLN, Neb. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's soccer team (4-2-0, 1-0-0 IIAC) ended their two-game skid with a 4-2 win over Nebraska Wesleyan (4-2-3, 0-1-0 IIAC) on Sunday. After conceding an early goal, the Duhawks responded with two goals before the halftime break and two following to record their first conference win of the season. Senior Calvin Miller finished with a goal and an assist, bringing his season point total to seven.

FIRST HALF 
  • Nebraska Wesleyan came out of the gates with intensity and it paid off early. A throw-in on the near sideline bounced around in the box until it found the head of Will Weber, but junior Jacob Peterson was in perfect position to save the scoring opportunity. 
  • The Duhawks earned a throw-in during the 12th minute and the delivery from Miller found junior Spencer Moore on the far post, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
  • The Prairie Wolves earned a corner in the 16th minute and with the service from Tanner Wood, Nebraska Wesleyan broke the deadlock after Drew Miller flicked his shot on target, benefiting from a courteous bounce off the crossbar, to score the opening goal.
  • The Prairie Wolves caught Loras in transition and nearly doubled their lead on a shot from Wood at the penalty spot, but Peterson was there to make the save.
  • In the 44th minute, the Duhawks caught a break after Nebraska Wesleyan was whistled for a foul inside of the box. Miller stepped to the line and buried his penalty to knot the match at 1-all. 
  • Thirteen Seconds later, Loras used its momentum from the first goal and struck the scoreboard again off a throw-in from Miller on the near sideline. The service bounced over a pack of players, including the Nebraska Weslyan goalkeeper, only to be headed into the back of the net by freshman Liam O'Connell for his second goal of the year.

SECOND HALF
  • Nebraska Wesleyan found the equalizer in the 60th minute, courtesy of a Loras foul inside the penalty area. From the spot, Weber delivered his shot past Peterson, bringing the sides level at 2-all. 
  • Knowing a draw was not in the plans, the Duhawks upped their offensive pressure in the attacking third. Senior Alex Bradley beat a pair of defenders and ripped a shot that was blocked away. Fellow senior Jonah Jacke worked to get on the end of the loose ball, only to have his shot blocked as well.
  • A Loras cross from the near sidleine found Moore on the far post in the 75th minute. The forward settled the ball down and struck his chance on goal, where it was blocked by a Nebraska Wesleyan defender. 
  • The Duhawks earned their second penalty of the day in the 79th minute. Olson stepped to the mark and beat Jack Nespor to put Loras in front.
  • With time winding down, Loras found an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Bradley delivered a cross from the near sideline to the far post where junior Ike Bruns struck the full volley and tucked it inside the post.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Calvin Miller I The defender opened the scoring on Sunday with his conversion from the penalty shot in the 44th minute, while also adding an assist on the second goal. Through six matches, Miller is tied for the team lead in points with seven.

UP NEXT 
The Duhawks travel to Whitewater, Wis. on Wednesday for the annual "Hawk Cup". UW-Whitewater enters record of 4-2-2 after defeating the previously undefeated Millikin on Saturday, 5-1. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. from Fiskum Field.
