Third Quarter Run Propels Duhawks to Third Straight

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - After trailing by nine at halftime, the Loras women's basketball team responded in a big way on Monday, out-scoring Coe by 11 in the second half to the tune of a 65-63 win. With their third straight win, the Duhawks improved to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the Iowa Conference. The Duhawks were led by senior Lori Obendorf with 15 points and junior Cyerra Hutchins, who added 12 points.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • The Kohawks jumped out to an early 13-6 lead after a 9-2 run as a result of three Loras turnovers. 
  • A 3-pointer from junior Miranda Chapman with two seconds remaining in pulled the Duhawks to within four points at 13-9 to end the quarter. 

Second Quarter
  • Senior Erin Weaver cut Coe's lead to three after driving the open lane and delivering her shot up and off the glass 6:17 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Kohawks stretched their lead to 11 after an 8-0 Kohawk run with 2:07 to play. Senior Terese McMahon ended the drought with a layup at the 1:47 mark of the second quarter.
  • Junior Lauren Stanich's three with 10 seconds to play was short-lived as Coe's Mickey Hansche delivered on a three at the buzzer, sending the Kohawks to the locker room leading 36-27.

Third Quarter
  • After the break, the Duhawks went on an 11-2 run with eight points coming from Hutchins, pulling Loras to within four with under four minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • The third quarter saw Loras capitalize on four Kohawk turnovers and a 7-of-14 shooting effort.

Fourth Quarter
  • Junior Addie Oberman gave the Duhawks their first lead of the half with a 3-pointer for her first points of the evening.
  • Obendorf delivered for Loras, converting a McMahon steal into an and-1 opportunity. The senior converted the three-point play to tie the game at 56 with 3:31 remaining in regulation
  • Hutchins went on another run of her own for the Duhawks, this time with a jumper and two free-throws, giving Loras the 65-60 advantage with ten seconds on the clock.
  • Coe's Jenna Lehman connected on a 3-pointer with two seconds to play, cutting the Duhawk lead to 65-63, but that would be as close as the visitors would come as Loras held on for the win.

The Cedar Rapids native notched 12 points and came up at clutch at crucial times for Loras, first scoring eight-straight points in the third quarter to put the Duhawks back in the game. In the fourth quarter, Hutchins again went on a run of her own, this time with four points to solidify the win for the Duhawks. The junior also added nine rebounds on the night.
