Men's Volleyball Swept by Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Quincy on Wednesday night in its first road contest of 2017 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18). Junior Dylan Ross led the Duhawks with seven kills, hitting .214 for the match. Defensively, Loras combined for 13 team digs, with seven players recording at least one.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED 
Set 1
  • With both sides deadlocked at 17-all in an action-packed set one, the Hawks scored four consecutive points to pull ahead, forcing a timeout from head coach Jeremy Thornburg.
  • Trading points to the finish, the Duhawks were unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the first set, 25-20.
  • Ross' firepower was on full display, finishing with five kills and an .833 attack percentage in the first frame. 

Set 2
  • Quincy seemed to be in control of set two with a 12-9 lead, but a resilient Loras squad stormed back midway through the frame to even the match at 15-all.
  • Another timely run from the Hawks, this time of five points, opened up a 20-15 advantage.
  • The Duhawks made a strong push to close out the frame, going on a 7-5 run, but were bested by Quincy in set two, 25-22.

Set 3
  • A sluggish start to the third set quickly put Loras down four, trailing 9-5.
  • Scoring eight of the next 11 points, the Duhawks took their first lead of the match, going ahead 13-12 on a kill from sophomore Austin Kuchenbecker.
  • The Hawks proved their toughness down the stretch, however, ending the frame on a 12-5 run to take the set, 25-18, and, subsequently, the match by a 3-0 score.

Anchoring the offensive attack, the Oak Forest, Ill. native set the tone for the Loras offense from the first serve on his way to seven kills and a .214 attack percentage. 

UP NEXT
The Duhawks have a day off from competition on Friday before opening conference play against Greenville on Friday with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. The Panthers are 0-1 following an opening night loss to Lindenwood-Belleville.
