Rife's Extra-Time Winner Caps Comeback Against Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Sophomore Kody Rife sent the Loras men's soccer team back to the Key City with smiles on their faces on Tuesday night, propelling the Duhawks to a 3-2 victory in extra time with his 40-yard strike into the top corner. Prior to Rife's winner, Loras had battled back from 1-nil and 2-1 deficits with a pair of goals from sophmore Mark Broderick.

STARTING XI
1 - Peterson / 2 - Berardi / 4 - McDonnell
5 - Pacholski / 7 - O'Connell / 9 - Simon
11 - Singleton / 13 - Moore / 19 - Broderick
23 - Bruns / 25 - Galvez

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
-Tuesday's match started with each team trading opportunities, but it didn't take long for Wartburg to capitalize, opening the scoring in the 15th minute
-Loras clawed and scratched their way back to try and level before the end of the half, targeting four shots on goal, all of which were turned away
-The Duhawks finally broke through in the 65th minute with sophomore Mark Broderick's third goal of the season … Broderick found  himself with just enough space inside the penalty area to slot his shot past the Knights' keeper
-Seven minutes later, a Wartburg free kick was misplayed inside the box and the Knights poked it through to regain the lead at 2-1
-Approaching the final 10 minutes, senior Spencer Moore was sent to the ground in front of the Loras bench and drew the foul … On the ensuing free kick, freshman Danny Chavarria found the head of Broderick who rose above the crowded airspace to redirect the service into the twine
-Neither side registered a shot in the remainder of regulation, sending the match to extra time
-Wartburg came into extra time ready and targeted four of its five shots on frame, forcing four saves out of senior Jacob Peterson
-Following a "line change" that brought four new players into the match, Rife collected the bouncing ball and on the half-volley, ripped his shot from 40 yards, sending it top corner and the Duhawks to their fourth-straight conference victory

NOTABLES
-Tuesday was the first career brace for Broderick, who now has six goals and 16 points in his career
-Peterson registered his first career shot on goal and narrowly missed with his header attempt … His nine saves set a personal-best and are the most by a Loras goalkeeper in a single match since Adam Kelsch recorded nine saves against Wartburg on Nov. 9, 2009
-Tuesday's match-winner for Rife was the first goal in his collegiate career

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME - MARK BRODERICK
Not once, but twice did Broderick bring the Duhawks back from a one-goal deficit, scoring his third and fourth goals of the season, along with his first career game-winning goal.
