CINCINNATI (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's volleyball team concluded its second MCVL road trip of 2017 on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-1 to Mount St. Joseph (18-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21). The middle-hitting duo of sophomore
Austin Kuchenbecker and freshman
Ian Walsh combined for 14 kills, four blocks and a .384 attack percentage in the match. Sophomore
Aaron Miller totaled 15 assists, seven kills and five digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One
- Sophomore Alfredo Lopez recorded his third kill of the frame on an assist from sophomore Aaron Miller, which gave Loras a 12-8 lead.
- The Duhawks' offensive efficiency continued in set one as junior Dylan Ross hammered home a kill from Lopez to put them ahead 20-15.
- After a Lion timeout, back-to-back kills from Ross extended Loras' lead to seven, a lead they would not relinquish.
- The Duhawks combined to hit .348 in set one with 10 kills and two errors on 23 attempts, resulting in the opening set victory, 25-18.
Set Two
- Mount St. Joseph scored five-straight points midway through set two to take a commanding 13-6 lead.
- Another scoring run, this time of four-straight, gave the second frame to the Lions convincingly, 25-12.
Set Three
- An ace from Ross followed by a kill from sophomore Greg Kinney put Loras on top, 4-1.
- Kuchenbecker and Kinney went for back-to-back kills to take an 18-14 lead, forcing a timeout from by Mount St. Joseph.Â
- The Lions regrouped following the break in action, going on an 11-4 run to win the set, 25-22, and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set Four
- Tied at 7-all, MSJ used a four-point run to open the first significant margin of the final frame.
- The Duhawks used a 5-1 run of their own to tie up the match at 12-12 after a service ace from Miller.
- Both sides traded points to the 21-all mark, but the Lions scored the final four tallies to close out the set, 25-21, and win the match, 3-1.

Loras will host its first MCVL homestand next weekend against Benedictine and MSOE, beginning Friday, Feb. 10. The Eagles enter with a 3-4 record overall and 2-1 mark in the MCVL. In its only action of the week, Benedictine was swept by Dominican at home. The Raiders are 2-1 after sweeping North Central and Lakeland by identical 3-0 set scores to open league play.
