Trio of Duhawks leads Women's Basketball Past Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - After falling in their first matchup of the season to Buena Vista, the Loras women's basketball went on the road to steal an Iowa Conference victory from the Beavers on Saturday, 58-53. Forty-one of Loras' 58 points came from the trio of senior Terese McMahon, senior Lori Obendorf and junior Cyerra Hutchins.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • Loras gained an early 6-2 lead after a back-door pass from senior Lori Obendorf found fellow senior Terese McMahon who kissed the ball off the glass for two. 
  • Senior Kelly Barzowski found junior Miranda Chapman wide open from three to put the Duhawks up 9-7 with 4:55 remaining in the quarter. 
  • Sophomore Tayler Walker gave Loras a 10-point lead as the Hampton, Ill. native knocked down a shot from downtown, assisted by Stanich.
  • Heading into the second quarter, the Duhawks found themselves leading 26-11.

Second Quarter
  • Tough defensive play from both teams resulted in only four points being scored until the 4:00 mark, two of which for Loras coming from a jumper from Obendorf. 
  • The Beavers ended their scoring drought and immediately went on a 7-0 run, which was ended via 3-pointer from Stanich with 3:06 remaining in the quarter. 

Third Quarter
  • Buena Vista and the Duhawks traded points for the beginning of the third quarter to hold the Duhawks lead of 10 at 39-29 with six minutes remaining in the period. 
  • A 5-0 run for Buena Vista brought the Beavers within eight at 39-31 with 3:35 remaining in the quarter. 

Fourth Quarter
  • Loras drew four fouls in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter and converted on all six free-throw attempts.
  • In the final five minutes, the Beavers continued to foul, sending Hutchins to the line eight times, with the junior converting on seven, sealing the win for the Purple & Gold.

The Cedar Rapids native scored a team-high 18 points after making 14-of-16 shots from the free-throw line. Hutchins also added seven rebounds and four assists. 

NOTABLES
  • In total, Loras made 23 free-throws on the night, for their second highest total this season
  • Hutchins 14 free-throws marks a season-high for any Duhawk this season
  • Buena Vista totaled 12 second-chance points to Loras' four, but the advantage wasn't enough to make up from the first quarter deficit

The Duhawks return home to take on Central this Wednesday with tip-off at 6 p.m. inside the Athletic & Wellness Center. In their conference game on Saturday, the Dutch fell to No. 11/13 Wartburg, 92-58.
