CLERMONT, Fla (Duhawks.com) - The Loras softball team concluded it's trip to Florida with a split, falling in their first game of the day, 5-3 to Wooster before earning an 11-2 win over Washington & Jefferson. In the win, senior
Dani Stromert went 3-for-4 from the plate while scoring two runs and collecting three RBIs for the Duhawks.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One vs. Wooster
- The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first after a bases-clearing double.
- Base hits from the sophomore duo of Ashley Lentine and Megan Larson gave Loras runners on the corners with no outs, but the rally was quelled without and damage.
- Loras broke through and cut the deficit to two after a RBI double to the left-center gap that rolled to the fence. The Duhawks tacked on another run when senior Cate Paulsen scored on a pass ball after back-to-back walks to Loras hitters.
- Wooster regained its three-run lead in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a Duhawk fielding error.
- Loras went down swinging in the home half of the seventh, beginning with a leadoff home run by Larson after fouling off six consecutive pitches.
- The Duhawks' rally continued and had the winning run on base but a pop out ended the game and handed Loras its second loss of the season.
Game Two vs. Washington & Jefferson
- Loras made the opening loss disappear in a hurry, striking for three runs on four hits in the top of the first.
- The Duhawks kept the bats going and tacked on runs in the next two innings to take a 5-0 lead.
- A pair of throwing errors in the third inning opened the doors for the Presidents to score their first runs of the game.
- A home run from Lentine coupled with base hits from Stromert and junior Regan Wolverton brought five more runs across the plate for Loras in the fourth inning and extended the lead to eight.
- Stromert capped the scoring for the Duhawks with an RBI double, scoring sophomore Makayla Sokoloski.
- In relief, junior Emma Corkill cruised through the fifth inning, needing only four pitches to retire Washington & Jefferson in order and seal the victory, 11-2.
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Megan Larson | The sophomore was 2-for-4 with one RBI while scoring another. Larson raised her batting average to .478 and slugging percentage to .783. The Huntley, Ill. native has reached base safely in 12 of Loras' 13 games this season.
Dani Stromert | Stromert had a strong performance at the plate in the Duhawks win over the Presidents, going 3-for-4 while driving in three runs and scoring two of her own. The Cedar Rapids native worked her way to a three-hit performance with a pair of doubles.
