Baseball Hammers Chicago for First Win of Season

Loras dropped a 7-6 loss to Illinois Wesleyan to open day

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (Duhawks.com) - Loras' offense came alive on Saturday, pounding out 29 hits in two games, falling to Illinois Wesleyan, 7-6, and defeating Chicago, 15-. Junior Danny Weis went 3-for-5 against the Maroons, driving in three runs and stealing two bases.5

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED 
Loras vs. Illinois Wesleyan
  • Junior Michael Muto drove in the first run of the game on a RBI single to right field in the top of the second, scoring senior Thomas Johnson to give the Duhawks an early 1-0 lead.
  • After a two-out single to center by senior Tony Heiser, junior Ryan Koester stepped to the plate and blasted his first home run of the season to left field for a 3-0 Loras lead.
  • Illinois Wesleyan responded with a two-run home run of their own in the bottom of the third off junior Brad Schwind, cutting the Duhawk lead to 3-2. 
  • Schwind went 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight while allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
  • Junior Aidan Wojciehowski came on in relief of Schwind in the sixth with runners on first and second with two outs, and held the Titans scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Illinois Wesleyan plated three in the bottom of the eighth off Wojciehowski to take a 6-4 lead into the ninth.
  • The Duhawks went to work on a rally, beginning with a leadoff double by sophomore Danny Paluch. Sophomore Jake Oglesby roped a pinch-hit single into right, sending Paluch to third on the play before Heiser drove him in on an RBI single to right field.
  • Koester's sacrifice fly tied the game at 6-all, scoring Oglesby from third.
  • After the leadoff man grounded out to senior Nolan Ritter, the Titans' Jake Stewart blasted a walk-off home run to win it for Illinois Wesleyan.

Loras vs. Chicago
  • Chicago jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, after a walk paired with two singles to give the Maroons the edge. 
  • Loras responded immediately, rattling off three hits coupled with a pair of Chicago errors to take the 4-3 lead. Highlighted in the inning was Weis double to left field that scored Koester and Heiser.
  • Muto put his team in front with an RBI single to center field, scoring Oglesby, who had reached via error.
  • The Duhawks tacked on another run in the bottom of the second with Weis' third RBI of the game, scoring Heiser on a sacrifice fly to left for the 5-3 lead.
  • Loras' offensive outpouring continued into the bottom of the fourth, as Oglesby drove a single through the right side to score Weis and Koester and open an 8-3 advantage.
  • The Maroons picked up a run in the top of the fifth when they capitalized on a Loras fielding error with a double cutting the Duhawk lead to 8-4. 
  • In the home half of the sixth, the Duhawk offense exploded with six runs on four hits.
  • Muto picked up an RBI with a single to center followed by a walk with the bases loaded and then sophomore Austin Konagel hit a bases-clearing triple before scoring on the ensuing throwing error.
  • Chicago picked up a run in the top of the seventh by a Loras throwing error on a ground ball with runners on first and second. 
  • Loras reached the slaughter rule mark in the bottom of the eighth when the Duhawks hit back-to-back doubles tallying their 15th run of the game to win, 15-5. 

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Ryan Koester | The West Chicago native belted his first home run of his junior season and finished with three RBIs. Through the first three games of the season, Koester has a .600 slugging percentage.
Danny Weis | Former Joliet Catholic prep owned the hot bat on Saturday, going 3-for-4 in the cleanup spot with a double and three RBIs. After three games, Weis leads the team with a .417 average and is 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

NOTABLES
  • As a team, Loras is batting .305 through their first three games having scored 22 runs
  • In two games Saturday, Muto drove in four runs, hitting four singles and a double
  • Against Chicago, the Duhawks were 10-for-25 with runners on base and a perfect 7-for-7 in scoring opportunities with runners on third
