Softball Bounces Back to Earn Split with Beavers

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras softball team opened its 2017 conference season with a split over Buena Vista on Saturday. In game one, the Duhawks fell 3-2 in 10 innings after a 3-for-4 performance at the plate from sophomore Lauren Fritz. Loras came back to earn an 8-3 win in game two and were led by sophomore Megan Larson's 3-for-4 day.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One
  • The Duhawks hopped on the board first as junior Regan Wolverton advanced to home from third on a Buena Vista fielding error.
  • Despite allowing two base hits in the inning, freshman Emily Reilly struck out three in the bottom of the third to send the Beavers down scoreless.
  • A Buena Vista home run in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 1-all.
  • Loras threatened to retake the lead in the top of the eighth with runners on the corners and no outs, but the Beavers turned a double play and subdue the threat.
  • In the top of the 10th, Fritz pushed the Duhawks in front with a solo home run for the 2-1 lead.
  • Buena Vista returned in the bottom of the 10th and took its first lead after four consecutive hits. A two-out single delivered the knockout punch as the Beavers took game one, 3-2.

Game Two
  • In the top of the first, the Duhawks crafted a two-out rally with back-to-back base hits from Stromert and Fritz to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Bayley Monroe got the start in the circle for Loras in game two and after two quick outs, Buena Vista drew a walk and smashed a double to right center to cut Loras' lead in half.
  • Larson connected on her fourth home run of the season in the third inning but the Beavers were quick to answer with a home run of their own.
  • Four singles and a double by the Duhawks opened and 8-2 lead in the sixth.
  • A two-out RBI single brought the Beavers to within five in the bottom of the sixth before junior Emma Corkill earned her third save of the season.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Lauren Fritz | The sophomore went 3-for-4 at the plate including a double and home run in the Duhawks game one loss. Fritz is now in the top-10 in the Iowa Conference with a .632 slugging percentage after three extra-base hits on Saturday.
Megan Larson | Like Fritz, Larson also went 3-for-4 at the plate on Saturday in Loras' second game. Larson knocked a home run while scoring three of the Duhawks' eight runs.

NOTABLES
  • The Duhawks slugging percentage of .502 is second in the Iowa Conference behind last-year's champions, Luther.
  • Junior Savannah Fowler laid down two sacrifice bunts in Loras' game two win, both of which led to the Duhawks plating a run
  • Fritz and junior Shannon Coyle extended their hitting streaks to nine
