MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's lacrosse team set a program record for wins in a season on Monday, defeating Cornell in conference play, 17-12. Senior
Brittany Miller scored five goals and added an assist along with five draw controls and two caused turnovers to aid in the victory.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
- An early yellow card by Cornell opened the lane for Miller to score on the man-advantage for her 12th of the season.
- Ten seconds later, Miller had corralled the draw control and taken it directly to goal to score her second of the night.
- Freshman Olivia Flynn took the pass from senior Hannah Nelson and bounced in her 24th goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.
- Following a timeout, the Rams put a stop to Loras' run and netted their first of the night at the 22:35 mark.
- Both teams traded blows the rest of the half with neither team able to mount much of an advantage.
- Cornell's goal with 54 seconds left brought the Rams to within one at 8-7, but junior Sarah Hanson answered the call with a goal 13 seconds later to send the Duhawks to the halftime break leading by two.
Second Half
- Loras and Cornell traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the half with both the Rams and Duhawks netting two goals apiece.Â
- Consecutive goals from Nelson and Flynn paced Loras to a 13-9 lead with 11:39 remaining in the half. Flynn's goal, her 26th of the season, marked the widest margin of the game.Â
- Within two minutes. Cornell responded with two quick goals of it's own after gaining possession off the draw control.Â
- A free position goal scored by Flynn shifted the momentum back in the Duhawks' favor with a 15-12 lead and less than six minutes remaining in regulation.Â
- With under 90 seconds on the clock, the Duhawks netted two insurance goals, with the second coming from junior AnnaRose Einarsen.Â
