DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Seeking its first win over Wartburg in program history, the Loras women's lacrosse team was denied victory on Thursday, falling in double overtime, 6-5. Junior
Ashley McGee kept the Duhawks in the game, totaling six saves while causing two turnovers and collecting two ground balls.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
- After a Wartburg turnover, Loras tallied the first goal of the night as junior Nia Stompanato went coast-to-coast and sent her shot to the back of the net for her first goal of the season.Â
- Three minutes later, the Knights jumped on the board for their first of the game to pull the score to even.Â
- Senior Brittany Miller took a pass from senior Anna Schwalbe and slid past Wartburg's defense to regain the lead at 2-1.Â
- Schwable came up big again on the offensive side of the ball, netting her 31st goal of the year for a 3-1 Duhawk lead with 6:56 remaining in the opening half.
- Following a save by McGee, Loras failed on the ensuing clearing attempt and provided the Knights with ample time to score, which they took advantage of with 40 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one at 3-2.
Second Half
- Less than 30 seconds into second half, Wartburg tied the game on a goal by Allie Stahmer.
- Freshman Olivia Flynn stole the lead back for Loras, scoring her 28th of the season on an assist from junior Sarah Hanson with 25:16 remaining.
- After a foul by the Knights, junior Katie Kulas delivered the long pass to front of goal, connecting with Hanson who sent home the winner at the 19:58 mark.
- The Knights drew to within one after a goal with 8:35 remaining and netted the equalizer with four seconds remaining, forcing the game to overtime.
Overtime
- The first overtime period saw strong offensive and defensive play from both teams as the game remain tied through the first six minutes of extra play to force a second overtime period.Â
- As overtime wore on, Wartburg began to pull the momentum into its favor, finally breaking the deadlock with its fifth shot of the period with 2:01 remaining in the second overtime.
NOTABLES
- Hanson extended her goal-scoring streak to 14 games and remains as the only Duhawk to score in each game this season
- McGee broke the 100-save mark for the third time in her career and maintains a .433 save percentage this season
- With three games remaining this season, Loras has already broken seven team records
