Women's Lacrosse Stymied by Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's lacrosse team fell to Aurora, 15-9, in a back-and-forth MWLC-conference affair on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Olivia Flynn and junior Sarah Hanson combined for nine points in the game to lead the Duhawk offense.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
  • The Duhawks staked themselves to an early 2-1 advantage at the 25:17 mark in the first half following goals from Hansen and Flynn.
  • Aurora responded quickly, however, scoring three consecutive goals in a one-minute span to take a 4-2 lead with 13:16 remaining.
  • A resilient Loras side answered with a response of their own to the Spartan run, using Hanson's second goal of the half followed by a goal from junior Katie Kulas to tie the score at 4-all.
  • Four Aurora goals in the last eight minutes opened an 8-4 advantage for the Spartans.
  • In the waning moments of the first half, Hansen completed her hat-trick, scoring with 15 seconds remaining to send the Duhawks to the locker room trailing by three at 8-5.

Second Half
  • Using the momentum from Hanson's late tally, Loras began the second half with consecutive goals from Hanson at 26:58 and Flynn at 25:30 to pull within one.
  • After back-to-back Aurora goals, another Duhawk rally, this time on tallies from Flynn and senior Anna Schwalbe cut the deficit back to one at 10-9.
  • A stout Spartan defense held Loras off the board for the final 18:05, scoring five unanswered goals along the way to claim the 15-9 victory.

  • Hanson moved to within three points of 100 for her career and can become the second player in program history with 100 or more points
  • Additionally, Hanson became the career assists leader, recording her 21st on Saturday
  • As a team, Loras set a program record for ground balls in a season with 344
  • Junior Nia Stompanato tied a program record for caused turnovers in a single game, finishing with seven

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Olivia Flynn | The freshman from Apple Valley, Minn. netted three goals and one assist in defeat, marking her seventh game this season with at least three goals. Flynn ranks second on the Duhawks in goals (35) and points (44) in her first year in Purple & Gold.

UP NEXT
Loras returns to the Rock Bowl tomorrow afternoon for the 2017 season finale against Benedictine. The Eagles enter with a 7-8 overall record and a 4-6 mark in the MWLC after falling to Concordia Chicago on Friday, 10-8. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
