Benedictine's Buzzer-Beater Sinks Duhawks on Senior Day

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - In the final contest of the 2017 campaign, the Loras women's lacrosse team suffered a last-second defeat to Benedictine on Senior Day, 15-14. Senior Brittany Miller tallied five goals, all of which came in the second half, to pace the Duhawk attack.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
  • Senior Anna Schwalbe, junior Sarah Hanson and freshman Olivia Flynn scored two goals each in the first 13 minutes to open a 6-2 lead for the Duhawks.
  • Three consecutive goals by the Eagles cut the margin to one with 13:57 remaining in the half.
  • Both sides traded tallies to the completion of the opening half and Loras went into the locker room clinging to a 9-8 advantage.

Second Half
  • A slow start for the Duhawks and three consecutive Benedictine goals resulted in a 11-9 lead for the visitors.
  • With 18:04 left in the half, Miller netted Loras first goal of the second half, starting a scoring tear for the Waseca, Minn. native, who slotted five consecutive goals in a 14-minute span. 
  • The Duhawks led 14-13 with two minutes remaining, but two Benedictine goals in the last 49 seconds, including the game winner with one second left on the clock to steal the win, 15-14.

NOTABLES
  • Hanson, who finished with four points became the second player in program history to eclipse the 100-career point mark
  • In her third season in goal, junior Ashley McGee posted career-bests in goals against average (10.31), save percentage (.429) and wins (7)
  • Miller's five goals tied a career-high, matching her scoring effort from earlier this season against Cornell
