Softball Splits in Waverly

WAVERLY, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras softball team settled for a conference split on Saturday against Wartburg, taking game one, 13-9, before suffering an 8-5 loss in game two. Sophomore Megan Larson led the Duhawks, going 4-for-4 at the plate in game one with two home runs and three RBIs.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One
  • Sophomore duo of Ashley Lentine and Larson led things off with base hits but Loras was unable to score in the first frame as the Knights retired the next three hitters in order. 
  • Back-to-back extra base hits by junior Savannah Folwer and Lentine plated the Duhawks first runs of the game in the second inning.
  • Larson continued the rally with a two-run home run for an early 4-0 lead. 
  • Wartburg loaded the bases in the bottom of the second and managed to score once before freshman Emily Reilly ended the frame with a strikeout. 
  • A bases clearing double by the Knights in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 4-all. 
  • Wartburg continued the rally and plated three more runs to take a 7-4 lead, highlighted by a two-run home run.
  • Loras quickly responded, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth on one swing of the bat with senior Dani Stromert's first home run of the season.
  • The Knights went right back to work and answered Loras' two runs with two of their own the the 7-6 lead. 
  • Facing a 9-7 deficit heading into the Duhawks last at bats, Loras rallied for six runs on five hits, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Lentine and Larson. 
  • Freshman Kyleigh Becker sent down the last three Knight batters, capping her relief performance at 3.0 innings without conceding a hit.

Game Two
  • The Duhawks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with a two-RBI base hit from sophomore Melanie Gerbig. 
  • Wartburg struck for a single run in the home half of the first to cut Loras' lead in half.
  • Senior Cate Paulsen opened the top of the fourth with a single back up the middle and patiently waited on the base paths until the Duhawks crafted a two-out rally, scoring three runs on three hits and taking advantage of a Knights' throwing error.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Wartburg earned two runs back on two doubles. 
  • Duhawk errors and inconsistent pitching opened the door for the Knights to tie the game at 5-all in the bottom of the fifth. 
  • A three-run homer from Wartburg in the bottom of the seventh lifted the home team to the win and forced Loras into a split on the day.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Megan Larson | The sophomore exploded at the plate, hitting 4-for-4 with two home runs. The Huntley, Ill. prep also tacked on three runs and three RBIs. 
Cate Paulsen | Like Larson, Paulsen also had a flawless game at the plate as the Raymond native went 3-for-3 while scoring a run. Paulsen also caught a Knight base runner stealing in the Duhawks' loss. Her three hits set a career-best.

NOTABLES
  • Junior Shannon Coyle extended her current-hit streak to 15 games, which marks the longest streak by any Duhawk this season
  • With multi-RBI games today, junior Bria Lenten and Larson have extended their total multi-RBI games to six and five, respectively
  • In addition, Larson matched her home run total from her freshman season
  • The Duhawks have now recorded 18 wins on the season and are in position for the program's first 20-win season since 2012

UP NEXT
The Duhawks return home on Sunday to take on Mount Mary in a non-conference match up with the Blue Angels. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
