Krakow Wins Title at Loras Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa(Duhawks.com) - In his first varsity action as a member of the Loras wrestling program, Jacob Krakow put on a dazzling display, winning the 174# bracket at the Loras Open on Saturday. As a team, the Duhawks totaled five placewinners, including two at 174#.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
• Krakow opened his day with a tech fall over Jacob Scherzer of Central, before pinning his teammate, Jeremy Scheuermann at the 2:54 mark … In the quarterfinal, Krakow advanced past Sam Elston with a 5-3 decision and moved to the final with a 7-2 win over Gabriel Rangel of Grand View … In the final, Maxwell Southard of Iowa State conceded by injury default, giving Krakow claim to the title
• Sam Schuler took third at 174#, totaling two falls and winning three bouts by decision … In his third place match, Schuler defeated Iowa State's Tate Battani by decision, 7-6
• Adam Valdez opened his day with a fall before suffering a 7-2 loss Tristan Lara of Northern Iowa … He battled his way through the consolation bracket, winning his fifth place match over Noah Nemer, who was wrestling unattached from Iowa State
• At 184#, Derek Venteicher placed fifth, defeating Michael Kordek of Northern Iowa, 7-4 … Venteicher's day included two wins over Kordek, including a 5-0 decision earlier in the tournament
• Matt Connolly opened his tournament with a pin of Malik Nottage of Ellsworth CC before being sent to the consolation bracket by Iowa's Nelson Brands … Once on the backside, Connolly went 1-2 with a win by decision over Kyle Benjamin

UP NEXT
Loras squares off against crosstown rival Dubuque next Friday in American Rivers Conference action. The Spartans are currently 9-6 overall and 1-4 in the A-R-C. Action begins at 7 p.m.
