Box Score

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Oct. 23, 2019) – The Loras College women's volleyball team (17-7, 4-1 A-R-C) fell 3-1 at the hands of non-conference Cornell College (15-7) on Wednesday night.

Loras took control of the first set thanks to kills from Abby Allgeyer, Kendra Cave and a service ace from Krystal Tranel. Kelly Boge added a kill off the hands of Jessalyn Roling to give Loras the 13-9 lead, but Cornell fired back five straight points to take the lead, 14-13. The Rams chipped away at the Duhawks' lead, even tying the set 20-20 before Cave hit a kill to spark Loras' lead en route to a 25-22 victory.

The Duhawks struggled to get momentum in the second set, facing a 12-4 deficit early. Kills from Allgeyer and Boge helped get Loras on the board, but the Rams held off the comeback to win the second set, 25-11. The Duhawks found the rhythm to open the third set as Cave and Allgeyer helped the team to a 4-1 lead and a block from Moira Mixan and Jackie Alberto along with kills from Cave and Boge put Loras up 14-13. Loras was able to force the Rams to make mistakes on offense, opening the door for April Grostic to serve up an ace and Boge to come away with two more blocks, setting Allgeyer up for set point at 24-22. Cornell was not done fighting and put up four straight points to close the set, 26-24.

Boge hit the opening kill in the fourth set to help spur Loras to a 6-3 lead, but Cornell went on another scoring run, adding six points to lead 9-6. Kills form Alberto and Cave halted the Rams' progress for a moment, but soon Cornell had tallied a 24-16 lead. A solo block from Lyndsi Wilgenbusch held the Rams at match point and Loras received another opportunity off an attack error by Cornell off the long rally, but the Rams scored the final kill of the evening, taking the fourth set 25-18.

Allgeyer paced the team with 14 kills while Cave and Boge each posted ten kills. Boge led the defensive efforts at the net with five blocks while Tranel added 22 digs on the night.

The Duhawks return home on Friday, Oct. 25 to host Simpson College at 7 P.M. Loras will celebrate its senior class on Saturday, Oct. 26, hosting Central College at 4 P.M.
