Oct. 30, 2019 - The Loras college women's volleyball team (19-8, 6-2 A-R-C) concluded American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season play on the road on Wednesday, falling 3-0 to local foe the University of Dubuque (19-10, 5-3 A-R-C).
The Spartans took control of the first set early and soon held a 17-7 lead over the Duhawks. A kill from
Kendra Cave and back-to-back service aces from the team's leading server,
Moira Mixan, helped Loras rally back.
Jackie Alberto and Mixan each added two kills off assists from
Jessalyn Roling, but could not overcome the deficit, dropping the first set, 25-14.
A kill from Cave gave Loras positive start to the second set and another from the senior tied the score early. The Spartans continued to see success on offense, soon taking a 16-10 lead, but an error by Dubuque gave Cave the serve, leading the Duhawks to score six-straight points to tie the set, 16-16. Dubuque responded with a five point run to halt Loras' momentum and gave just enough edge for the Spartans to pull away, 25-20.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair as Loras regained its rhythm, coming back to tie it 8-8 and take a 9-8 lead following a kill from
Kelly Boge that forced the Spartans to call a timeout. Dubuque regained control to take a two-point lead but it was Boge again who stopped the Spartans' momentum with a kill off the dig sent over by Dubuque. Loras continued to battle back with kills from Boge and Alberto, but Dubuque challenged the Duhawks at the net, coming away with two key blocks to extended its lead  21-14 en route to a 25-15  victory.
Alberto tallied nine digs while Cave had eight and Kinney had seven.
Krystal Tranel and Mixan had two service aces each and Cave had one while Tranel also recorded 12 digs.
Loras returns home on Thursday, Nov. 7 to host the semifinal match for the A-R-C Tournament, playing the winner of the No. 3 and No. 6 seed match between Dubuque and Buena Vista University on Tuesday. The semifinal inside Lillis Court is set for 7 P.M.
