Duhawks Claim Hardware at Luther and Grand View Open

November 16, 2019 - The Loras College wrestling team competed at two separate meets today, one team competed in the Grand View Open located in Des Moines, Iowa while the other team traveled to Decorah, Iowa to compete in the Luther Open. Loras had a combined total of three champions between the two open tournaments. 

Brandon Murray (157#) and Travis Willers (165#) captured gold in their respective weight classes at the Grand View Open, while Shane Liegel (184#) was the lone champion at the Luther Open. 

Leading 4-2 after a first period takedown and a second period reversal, Murray pinned unattached Drew Scharenbock of Wisconsin in the third period to remain unbeaten this season. Willers used some late stage heroics to come back to win 9-8 over Zane Mulder of Iowa State in the final at 165#. Mulder took an 8-7 lead with :26 to go before Willers regained the lead with a reversal in the final eight seconds. At Luther, Liegel defeated Chase Melton from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire by major decision, 13-0, in the silver division.

Jacob Krakow (174#) brought home the silver medal for Loras at Grand View while Dakoda Powell (285#) capped off the weekend's placers with the bronze at Luther.

Between the two tournaments, the Duhawks totaled 16 falls, bringing their season total to 34.

Loras returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23., at the Concordia Wisconsin (CUW) Open. Action begins at 9 a.m. from Mequon, Wisconsin.
