DULUTH, Minn. (Nov. 23, 2019) – Behind 20 points from
JT Ford and a double-double by
Jordan Boyd, the Loras College men's basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 88-67 win against the College of St. Scholastica Saints (0-5) on Saturday.
Ford put up the first basket for the Duhawks but sharp-shooting by the Saints forced Loras to play catch-up early, trailing 12-4 with 16:39 to play in the half.
Matt Dacy-Seijo got the Duhawks back on track with a three-pointer before
Jalen Boyd made his jumper to pull within three. For the next three minutes, neither team was able to score, but St. Scholastica found momentum again to lead 16-12 with less than 12 minutes to play in the first half. Loras battled back to tie the score 20-20 with nine minutes to play and a layup off the fast break by
Jordan Matthews gave Loras a 22-20 lead with 8:06 remaining. Loras extended the advantage 36-31 off a layup by
Cole Navigato with 2:32 to play, but the Saints responded with a layup and three-pointer to tie the score at the half, 36-36.
The second half was a back and forth affair until a layup by Ford sparked a run that the Saints could not rival with 10:52 remaining. Loras extended the lead on a second run with three minutes to play after Ford made the layup and free-throw on the and-one and
Ocean Johnson,
Cole Navigato, and
Jalen Boyd added points to secure the victory.
Jordan Boyd had 16 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and Ford had eight rebounds, one steal and three assists along with his 20 points, 11 of which he tallied in the first half. Loras was 7-10 from the free-throw line and led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
The Duhawks resume action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as they host the first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) matchup of the season against Central College. Tipoff inside the Athletic & Wellness Center is set for 7:30 P.M.
