MEQUON, Wis. (November 23, 2019) – The No. 2 Loras College wrestling team put on a stellar performance at the Concordia University-Wisconsin Open in Mequon, Wis., tallying four champions, an Outstanding Wrestler award as well as a runner-up finish.
Coming off a bye in the first round,
Clint Lembeck advanced to the championship bout by scoring two major decisions and a fall. In a back-and-forth match, Lembeck dropped a 5-3 overtime decision to Hazen Rice of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to grab runner-up honors.Â
Brandon Murray continued his strong season with a dominant showing in the 157-pound bracket. Murray recorded two falls and a major decision to advance to the championship match. Going up against Shea Hartzler of Wartburg College, Murray used a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal to defeat Hartzler by way of 4-1 decision to earn a 1
st-place finish.
Freshman
Shane Liegel improved on his impressive freshmen campaign by capturing the 184-pound championship and also winning the Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament. Liegel became the first freshman in Loras history to win the CUW open and defeated two top-ranked opponents to win the title. In the final bout, Liegel scored a takedown in sudden victory over Cody Baldridge of North Central College to win 3-1.
Three-time All-American
Guy Patron Jr. made his way to the championship bout by scoring two falls, a major decision and a technical fall. In the penultimate bout, Patron Jr. won a hard-fought 8-5 decision over Kobe Woods of Wartburg College to grab the 197-pound title.
Winning the fourth and final title for the Duhawks was heavyweight
Wyatt Wriedt. Wriedt won his first match by way of fall, and then rallied off three decisions in a row to reach the title bout. Wriedt won the Heavyweight bracket by defeating Wade Ripple of Wabash College by medical forfeit.
The Duhawks will travel to La Crosse, Wis. on Saturday, Dec. 7 to battle top-10 foes University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and University of Wisconsin La-Crosse. Duals are scheduled to begin at 10 A.M.
