SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Dec. 19, 2019) - No. 23 Loras College women's basketball team, traveled to Puerto Rico to take part in the Puerto Rico Sports Tour, and took their first game of the weekend against Shenandoah University, 62-32.
The Duhawks pulled ahead quickly in the first quarter, with Courtney Schnoor making an impact in the paint from early on, with help from her team from outside, to give Loras the advantage 17-6 at the end of the first. Loras did not give in, as Marissa Schroeder forced a turnover in the first 14 seconds of the second quarter. After a 14 point run by the Duhawks, Shenandoah came back with two quick points off a foul with 3:03 remaining. The Hornets then ended the quarter with a 3-pointer, but still faced a 37-14 score, in favor of Loras.Â
Kari Fitzpatrick then opened the second half of the game with a layup within the first 3 seconds of the third quarter, followed by a steal from Schroeder. Both teams hit an offensive block, as 3 minutes of the quarter went scoreless, before Schnoor got the Duhawks back in the offensive rhythm with yet another layup from in the paint, which shut down the Hornets for the remaining 4:06, allowing the Duhawks to take the lead 52-20 going into the final 10 minutes. Loras lost steam in the fourth quarter, being outscored by Shenandoah 12 to 10, but still coming out with a victory.Â
Before heading back home, the Duhawks play their last game of the tournament on Friday, December 19, against Colby-Sawyer College, with tip-off set for 11 a.m.
