Dec. 29, 2019 – After a two-week break from competition, freshman guard
Jake Healy put on a display for the home crowd on Sunday as the Loras College men's basketball team (9-2, 3-0 A-R-C) welcomed Duhawk basketball fans back to Lillis Court with a 91-82 win against non-conference Monmouth College (6-3).
Loras was forced to play catch-up early, trailing 25-17 halfway through the first half before a layup and three-pointer from
Rowan McGowen and back-to-back layups from Healy sparked a 23-0 run by the Duhawks that took five minutes off the clock. The Scots put a brief stop to the run with 3:39 to play in the half, but a layup by McGowen and a jump shot by
Ocean Johnson gave the Duhawks a 44-35 advantage going into the locker room.
Monmouth struck first to open the second half, cutting Loras' lead to 44-42 in the opening minute, but
Cole Navigato helped Loras pulled ahead with a layup with 18:50 to play. A three pointer by Monmouth's D.J. Swift gave the Scots a four-point lead with 16:48 left on the clock, but Healy helped get the Duhawks' offense going again with a layup before Navigato slammed in a dunk off Healy's pass to tie the game 50-50.
With 9:07 left to play, Navigato drained a three off an assist from McGowen before
Jordan Boyd capitalized on a turnover for a fast break dunk to give Loras a 70-58 lead. Monmouth was not done fighting and clawed back to cut the score 82-80 with two minutes remaining, but would only score once more in the final minute after Loras added nine points to the scoreboard to come away with the win.
Healy tallied 19 points off the bench and McGowen had 19 points of his own while Healy and Navigato posted seven rebounds apiece. Healy was a perfect 8-8 from the field and 2-2 at the line, adding one assist and two steals. Boyd had four rebounds to go with his 14 points and a team-high four steals and one blocked shot.
The Duhawks have a quick turnaround as they travel to play non-conference opponent MacMurray College on Monday, Dec. 30. Tip-off is set for 4 P.M.
