ROCHESTER, Minn. (Duhawks.com) - The 2019 season began on Saturday for the Loras softball team at the RCTC Dome, with the Duhawks suffering a pair of setbacks at the hands of St. Catherine and UW-Stout.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
• The Duhawks kept St. Catherine scorless for two innings until they broke out for six runs on seven hits in the third
•
Ashley Lentine recorded Loras' first hit of the afternoon with a shot to center field
• The Wildcats broke out for another multi-run inning pushing their lead to eleven runs
•
Madison Franks opened the fifth inning with a bang as she sent a liner to the outfield which Maddie Doubek followed up with a single of her own
•
Jade Besler took a pitch to the body advancing Franks and Doubek to load the bases
• Franks saw a moment of opportunity when the pitcher threw a fastball to the backstop as she scored Loras' first run of the game
•
Ashley Lentine then sent Doubek home with a grounder to third base, making the score 11-2

Lauren Fritz got the Duhawks going early with a two out double to left field
•
Shannon Coyle missed a two run shot by mere feet but she was able to send Fritz home with the ground rule double
UW-Stout answered with a six run first inning off of five hits

Ellie Schill opened the second with a single to left, before advancing to second.

Madison Franks sent a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to advance Schill, Doubek hit a sac fly to the left fielder to sent Schill home, making it a 2-6 game

Alexandra Schmidt pinch ran for Besler following her single and scored the unearned run to cut the Wildcat lead to four runs

Melanie Gerbig collected a two out hit that allowed
Hadalyn Anderson to score Loras' fourth and final run of the game

The Duhawks will return to the field on March 8th and 9th when they travel to Minneapolis for four games in the Augsburg Dome, two against Crowne College and two against Northland College. Their double header against Crown is slated for 3:30 PM on the 8th while the Northland games will begin at 8:30 AM the next day.
