Feb. 15, 2020 –Playing its second match in as many days, the Loras College men's volleyball team (7-3, 1-0 CCIW) showed no signs of fatigue as the Duhawks scored their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) win of the season on Saturday, defeating Greenville University (1-7, 0-1 CCIW) in three-straight sets.
The Duhawks took a 5-1 lead with three kills from
Patrick Mahoney and one from
Ian Walsh, but the Panthers responded with four points to tie the set. The Duhawks found a rhythm again with kills from
Jake Filotto and Mahoney before the two paired up for a block that extended the lead 18-11. A solo block by senior
Ian Walsh put Loras at set point and set
Andres Martinez up to hit the kill, giving Loras a 25-14 first set win.
Greenville took control of the second set with an early 7-3 lead but three errors on the next points put Loras right back in the mix, down one point. A kill from Filotto sparked a six-point run, highlighted by back-to-back blocks from
Patrick Hollander and Mahoney. Mahoney lent a hand on three blocks in the set and
Joe Horn had the set-winning kill to help the Duhawks come away with a 25-16 victory.
Loras got off to a slow start in the third set, but a service error by the Panthers gave Hollander the serve and Walsh and Mahoney capitalized on the opportunity, scoring five points on a seven-point stretch. Leading 13-9, the Duhawks continued to hold control of the set as
Joe Horn served up an ace before assisting
Dalton Oberfoell for a kill to lead 24-19.
Hayden Castle scored the match-winning point to end the set 25-21.
Mahoney posted a standout stat line in the match as he led the team in kills (11), digs (six) and blocks (eight) and compiled a .733 hitting percentage. Hollander added 21 assists and limited the Panthers to single-digit kills in all three sets.
Loras continues CCIW play on Saturday, Feb. 22, hosting No. 8-ranked Carthage College at 3 P.M.
