LINCOLN, Neb. (Feb. 22, 2020) - Junior Rowan McGowen of the Loras College men's basketball team (17-8, 10-6 A-R-C) became the forty-third Duhawk player to reach 1,000 career-points in a hard-fought loss against American Rivers Conference opponent No. 6 Nebraska Wesleyan University (22-3, 15-1 A-R-C) on Saturday, coming up short by a final score of 88-73.
The Prairie Wolves got on the board first with a three-point basket but Matt Dacy-Seijo answered on the Duhawks' following possession with a nice jump shot of his own. The two teams battled back-and-forth trading baskets until McGowen gave Loras a two-point lead after a fastbreak layup. However, Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game on the following offensive possession and eventually took a three-point lead in the coming minutes. With 8:54 remaining in the first half the Prairie Wolves stretched their lead to ten points but JT Ford and McGowen quickly cut that lead in half just before the five-minute mark. The Prairie Wolves kept the pressure up on offense and headed into the locker room with a 48-37 advantage.
The Duhawks came out firing in the second half with a quick three-pointer from Dacy-Seijo to give Loras a spark coming out of halftime. Nebraska Wesleyan much like the first half responded with a basket of their own as McGowen and the Prairie Wolves traded layups back-and-forth on three straight possessions. The Duhawks kept it within striking distance for most of the second half but the Prairie Wolves high powered offense proved to be too much to overcome as Loras came up short on the road by a final score of 88-73.
McGowen surpassed 1,000 points on the night as he led the Duhawks with 25 points while Dacy-Seijo tallied 20 points and Ocean Johnson added ten points of his own.
Loras will host Wartburg College in the first round of the A-R-C tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Tip-off inside the Athletic & Wellness Center is set for 7 P.M.
