GREEN BAY, WIS. (Feb. 22, 2020) – The Loras College men's tennis team scored its third-straight win and swept a pair of matches against St. Norbert College and Ripon College on Saturday, improving to 3-2 on the season.
Loras got off to a strong start against the Green Knights with a 6-0 sweep in singles play.
Kevin Blomquist defeated Johnny Zanotti at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-1 and
Tommy Linkenheld took a 6-4, 6-1 win against Luke Andrekus at No. 3.
Konnor Barth won his match at No. 4 singles against Porter Beilfuss, 6-4, 6-2, and
Connor Pivnicka took a 6-2, 6-2 decision at the No. 5 spot against Jordan Crump.
Eian Coad defeated Michael Stanaszak at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3 and
Riley Collins battled through a grueling match at the No. 2 position, winning the first set 7-5 before falling 6-4 to Andrew Gehring in the second. Collins came back in the tiebreaker, winning 10-7 to give the Duhawks the insurmountable advantage going into doubles play.
St. Norbert came back to take two matches in doubles action, but Pivnicka and Linkenheld came away with a hard fought 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot against Crump and Beilfuss.
Against Ripon, Loras held a 3-0 lead in doubles play as Blonquist and Barth won their match at No. 1 singles against Adrian Granados and Junmo Kwon, 8-1 and Pivnicka and Linkeheld followed suit with an 8-1 win against Preston Wurtz and Daniel Garcia at No. 2. Coad and
Joe Schneider added another 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles against Forest Grade and Luke Austin.
In singles play,
Sean Gelski was the first to score a win, defeating Grade 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position and Coad's 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 against Austin solidified the win for the Duhawks. Collins added a win at the No. 1 spot against Wurtz., playing his second tiebreaker match of the day after bouncing back from a 7-6 loss in the first set to win the next two 6-1, 10-7. The Red Hawks took the win at No. 2 singles but not without an all-out battle by Linkenheld in the tiebreaker, but Schneider tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Garcia and Barth had a 6-3, 6-0 win against Granados at No. 3.
The Duhawks look to continue the win streak with a match against St. Mary's University (Minn.) on Sunday, Feb. 23. Matches begin at 3 P.M.
