AUBURDALE, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2020) – In what became the final game of the season under unprecedented circumstances, the Loras College baseball team (3-7) honored its senior class against Greenville University (5-8-1) on Friday. The Duhawks put two runners in scoring position to take the lead in the third inning but fell victim to a late run by the Panthers, surrendering a 6-2 loss.
In the top of the third,
Ryan Gorman got on base with a single to left field before advancing to second after
Danny O'Farrell walked. A fielding error by the Panthers' third baseman helped the Duhawks get on the board as Gorman scored and O'Farrell advanced to third.
Joe Egan, who had reached base on the error, stole second and put two runners in scoring position before
Luke Fennelly got on base after getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by
Ryan Wohlers turned into an RBI for Loras as O'Farrell scored from third to put the Duhawks ahead, 2-0.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the inning with a run before striking again in the bottom of the fifth. Greenville tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh and added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the 6-2 win.
Head Coach
Carl Tebon played all of his seniors in the game and had
Bill Luzzo starting in right field and
Sean Conneely starting at the mound for the Duhawks. Conneely pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits and recorded seven strikeouts. Fellow senior
Tanner Fallon pitched 1.1 innings in his final game in purple and gold, facing seven batters. The Duhawks recorded 12 strikeouts while Greenville tallied eight.
Matt Gruszkowski and Ryan Gordman went 2-3 at the plate while Egan hit a double in the top of the seventh and stole two bases.
Loras wrapped up the Florida trip with a 2-1 record and went 3-7 on the season. The Duhawks graduate six seniors and thank them for their dedication to the program and wish them the best in their future endeavors.
