Mar. 5, 2020 - Though snow was falling and the wind had a bitter chill, the Loras College women's lacrosse team (2-0) rallied behind hot shooting and made history on Thursday night as the Duhawks put on an offensive display against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) (0-2) in a 21-5 victory that marks the first time Loras has opened a season with a 2-0 record.
The Duhawks scored the first goal off the opening draw after
Katlynne Wolf connected with
Pearl Mueller and the freshman found the back of the net.
Olivia Flynn added another goal a few minutes later and tallied three more in the half as well as four goals by
Clare Brunn and three more for Mueller to give Loras a dominant 15-2 lead at the half.
The second half started off the same as the first with Mueller and Flynn scoring a goal apiece until Northwestern's Talia Sherry notched her third goal of the game to halt the Duhawks' run. Loras found momentum not long after as Wolf dished two assists to Mueller and Brunn scored the Duhawks' 20th goal of the contest. The Eagles added another goal with 11 minutes left to play, but
Marianne Gleason scored her second goal of the night with 1:35 remaining, securing a 21-5 victory for the Duhawks.
Mueller scored seven goals and added one assist in the game while Wolf added five assists and Flynn and Brunn scored five goals each. Twelve of the Duhawks' 21 goals were courtesy of assists as
Erika Williams,
Erin Conley and Brunn all had two each. Defensively, the Duhawks had 16 caused turnovers, including a team-high four by
Kayla Tilkes and three from
Rebecca Hiebing and Gleason while Hiebing and Flynn led the team with six ground balls. Goalkeeper
Lydia Phelps made five saves in the win and scooped up three ground balls.
Loras' next game will be against defending Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) champion Hamline University on Saturday, Mar. 7 in St. Paul, Minn. The game begins at 1 P.M.
