ST. PAUL, Minn. (Mar. 7, 2020) – Squaring off against the defending Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) champions, the Loras College women's lacrosse team put up a strong performance in the first half but fell victim to the Pipers' relentless offense, suffering the first loss of the season by a score of 18-7.
Clare Brunn put the Duhawks ahead to start the game, scoring just under four minutes into the contest. The Pipers responded with back-to-back goals but Brunn tied the game again with 20:12 remaining in the half until Hamline found momentum, scoring six unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead. The Duhawks found a break in Hamline's defense as
Pearl Mueller connected with Brunn for her hat-trick goal before Mueller took it to the cage herself a minute late. The Pipers closed out the first half with four more goals and 25 total shots, forcing Loras to play catch up in the second half.
Brunn opened the scoring for the Duhawks in the second half with a pair of goals in the first two minutes, but Hamline hammered in four more to extend the lead by 12 points.
Olivia Flynn scored the final goal of the game off an assist from Brunn in the final minute, but despite the Duhawks limiting Hamline to five goals in the second half, the Pipers' dominance at the draw circle and offensive barrage stymied Loras' defensive efforts and helped the hosts pull away with the victory.
Brunn tallied five goals and three draw controls while Mueller and Flynn each scored one goal.
Kayla Tilkes led the defensive effort with five ground balls while Flynn came away with two caused turnovers. In goal,
Lydia Phelps made 12 saves and scooped up four ground balls.
Loras' next game is set for Wed. Mar. 11 when the Duhawks travel to Augustana College. Game time is set for 5 P.M. in Rock Island, Ill.
