Oct. 26, 2021 - The Loras College men's soccer team (10-6-2, 5-2-1 A-R-C) closed out their regular season Tuesday night as they squared off against American Rivers Conference foe Coe College (1-14-3, 0-6-2 A-R-C) in their final conference matchup of the season. A two-goal second half catapulted the Duhawks to victory, seeing them place third in the A-R-C standings to earn the No. 3 seed in the A-R-C Tournament.
The two teams went into the half at a scoreless stalemate before
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon put the Duhawks on the board in the 60th minute as
Kevin Kucaba carried the ball down the left side of the field and put a well-placed cross into the box for Arias Mondragon to head past Coe keeper Maxwell Twight to go ahead 1-0.
The second goal of the night came on a Coe handball into the box that gave the Duhawks a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Head coach
Steven McCarthy called on
Nico Garcia to take the kick in which he tucked into the left corner of the net to secure the 2-0 shutout victory.
The Duhawks owned the game offensively with 36 total shots in the game and 14 shots on goal while holding the Kohawks to just three shots total and one reaching net. Senior goalkeeper
Connor Fitzpatrick made the save on the one on-target shot he faced in the game to record his fourth clean sheet of the season.
With the third seed in the A-R-C Tournament, the Duhawks are slated to host the six seeded Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Rock Bowl. Game time is still to be determined at this time.
