Oct. 6, 2021 - Continuing their rise in the national rankings, the No. 13/16 Loras College women's soccer team (11-0-1, 3-0-0 A-R-C) played host to the University of Dubuque Spartans (4-6-0, 0-2-0 A-R-C) on Wednesday evening. Junior midfielder
Payton McDonnell continued excelling on the ball offensively, netting one goal and posting two assists to secure the Duhawks' victory and extend the win streak to eight games.
The score was at a standstill for the first 33 minutes of the game before
Caitlin Farrell broke the scoreless stalemate as goalkeeper
Megan Wick punted a ball out of the box to find the head of McDonnell, whose pass landed at Farrell's feet to shoot past Dubuque keeper Karissa Chalus to put Loras up 1-0 where the score stayed through the end of the half.
The second half of the game saw the Duhawks strike again in the 58th minute as
Payton McDonnell lined up for a free kick outside the box, firing a shot to the back of the net to go ahead by two with just over 30 minutes to play.
Dubuque scored one back in the 75th minute on an unassisted goal by Emma Kober but the momentum didn't shift as the Duhawks continued to press the net, seeing the effort pay off in the 85th minute as McDonnell put a perfect ball in the box off a corner to find
Emily Perhats for her first goal of the season, bringing the score to 3-1 after 90 minutes of play.
McDonnell continues to show strength with assists, leading the conference with 10 on the season with the two Wednesday night bringing her just one from the second-most assists in program history in just her junior year. Farrell's goal brings her total to four on the year while McDonnell notched her second.
The Duhawks hammered the net offensively, taking 21 total shots with nine on goal while holding the Spartans to just five total. Wick, a sophomore goalkeeper from Iowa City, Iowa, turned away one of the two shots she faced in net, posting her first career assist on Farrell's first half goal.
Loras is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 as they take on the Dutch from Central College on the road. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM in Pella, Iowa.
