Loras Sends Freshmen to Luther

DECORAH, Iowa (Nov. 13, 2021) – With their top starters sitting for a week of rest, the Loras College wrestling team was on the road Saturday as they took part in the Luther Open, where freshman Logan Adamson led the way with a fifth place finish at 165 lbs. The event featured talent from all three NCAA divisions including University of Iowa, Upper Iowa University, Minnesota State-Mankato, Wartburg College, Coe College, Augsburg College and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
 
At the 125 lb. weight class, Justin Murray opened his weekend against Division II Upper Iowa opponent Colby Lopez. Murray earned a spot in the second round, downing Lopez by a 5-3 decision but was edged by Augsburg's Derek Steel in the second-round matchup.

After falling in the opening match, freshman Jayson Weidman made his way though the 125 lbs. consolation bracket taking down Luther's Yousuf Zigan with a 1:49 pin. Weidman then met up with teammate Murray in the next round where Weidman again stayed alive with an 8-7 decision over Murray before falling in the next round by a close 2-0 decision. 

Dylan Lauriano received a first round bye in the 125 lb. weight class and took on Augsburg's Wyatt Kaczrowski in the second round where Lauriano fell by way of a 4-2 decision to move to the consolation bracket. In consolation, Lauriano went up against Coe's Cael Long, seeing Lauriano come out with a dominant 20-3 technical fall to move on but he fell in the next round by a 5-0 decision.
 
Wrestling at 141 lbs., Jacob Hinkle went toe-to-toe with Adrian Coello from American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) rival Wartburg. Hinkle made easy work of Coello in the first round, winning by way of pin fall in just over a minute's time at 1:18 but was edged by Luther's Caden Schrage in the next match.
 
Receiving a first round bye at 157 lbs., Luke Battaglia went up against Cornell College's Jackson Gonzalez in the second round where Battaglia earned an 11-4 decision to go up against University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Owen Norman where Norman advanced in the following round.

Falling in his opening match at 157 lbs., Andrew Herbst moved into consolation where he went up against Jacob Heiden from Augsburg. Herbst stayed alive in the bracket with a 5-2 decision over Heiden before narrowly being defeated in the next round by a 5-3 decision.
 
Adamson went up against University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Austin Mowery in the 165 lb. weight class after receiving a bye in the first round. Adamson took care of Mowery in a mere 50 seconds before moving into the consolation bracket after falling to Augsburg's Seth Goetzinger. In consolation, Adamson racked up a pair of wins with a 9-6 decision over Carter Proffitt from Wartburg and an 8-4 decision over Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Reid Lawrence to earn a fifth place finish as the consolation champion.

The Duhawks are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 17 as they take on the Beavers from Buena Vista University in their first dual of the season. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in Storm Lake, Iowa.
