RV Duhawks Drop Top-25 Matchup to No 18 UW-Whitewater

Contact: Emily Adlfinger, Director of Athletic Communications, 563-588-7970

Nov. 27, 2021 – Sophomore Sami Martin led the team with 16 points in the RV Loras College women's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 A-R-C)'s second top-25 matchup in as many games but the Duhawks fell to the No. 18-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (6-0, 0-0 WIAC) 83-54 on Saturday inside the Patrick J. Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

Whitewater took the lead early, pulling ahead 8-0 in the first quarter until Sami Martin hit a jumper in the paint to put Loras on the board. The Duhawks saw momentum from three-pointers by Allie Brownson and Sydney Schuler to come within four points but Whitewater kept the edge and took a 19-9 lead into the second quarter. A layup by Madison Haslow and a jump shot by Madison Fleckenstein stopped the Warhawks' run in the second quarter but Whitewater continued to find the groove and took a 21-point lead with 2:04 left in the half. The Duhawks closed out the first half with a steal by Jaime Ryan to set up Cierra Bachmann for a shot with under a minute remaining but still trailed 38-22 heading into the locker room.

Schuler and Ryan found a spark to start the second half with a pair of three-pointers and a free-throw by Martin brought Loras within 13 with under eight minutes to go, but the Warhawks added seven-straight points to extend the lead, 49-29. Martin battled back with a pair of jumpers and Alli Udelhofen hit a three-pointer to stop Whitewater from gaining traction in the final two minutes of the period but the visitors tacked on four more to end the third quarter up 66-40.

The Duhawks were not going down without a fight and a layup by Martin spurred a back-and-forth offensive battle for the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Duhawks kept the Warhawks to their lowest-scoring quarter of the game, but Whitewater had built enough of a lead to hold on for the win.

Martin went 7-12 from the field and 2-3 at the line in addition to grabbing a team-best nine rebounds. Fleckenstein and Schuler each had six points while Bachmann and Megan Murray added three assists each.

The Duhawks resume American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at Coe College. Tip-off in Cedar Rapids is set for 5:30 P.M.
