MADISON, Wis. (Feb. 6, 2021) -Â Loras College men's volleyball opened the 2021 season on the road against Edgewood College. The Duhawks claimed their first victory of the season under first year head coach
Dylan Ross '18, sweeping the Eagles in a straight three sets.
Patrick Hollander set the tone of the match early in the first set, scoring the first point of the match on a service ace on Edgewood's Christopher Kahler. The Duhawks put up five on the Eagles before they would score on a Hollander service error. Loras dominated the first set, holding the lead the entirety of the set to win 25-13.Â
The second set garnered almost the same result as the first, with the Duhawks again never falling behind to the Eagles. After back-and-forth scoring early in the set, the Duhawks went on a four point scoring run, taking advantage of
Jacob Bonnett's heavy arm and attack errors from Edgewood. The run ended on a
Tyler Kratochvil error, but picked back up on an Eagles' service error and a kill from
Patrick Mahoney that put the Duhawks up by ten late in the set. A Nick Klubertanz service error earned the Duhawks the second set victory to go ahead 2-0 entering the third set.Â
Michael Dziewior started the third set off with a kill assisted by
Joe Horn to give the Duhawks the lead from the start. Moments later, the Eagles took their first lead in the match on a Max Nowak kill that put them up 3-2. Returning all-conference middle blocker
Andres Martinez answered immediately, starting a four point run on a kill assisted by
Joe Horn. Down by one in the middle part of the half, Edgewood put up four straight points to take their largest lead of the day but back to back kills from Loras'sÂ
Colin Dahill tied the score again at 15. With the score tied again late in the set at 22, the Duhawks punched their ticket to victory scoring three straight to win 25-22.Â
Sophomore all-conference outside hitter
Dorian Fiorenza led the attack for the Duhawks, recording eight kills on the day, followed by Mahoney who added five. Mahoney led the match with three services aces and dominated at the net defensively with five blocks.
The Duhawks return to the court on Feb. 11 for another non-conference matchup against Dominican University at 7 PM.Â
