RIVER FOREST, Ill. (Mar. 18, 2021) – The Loras College women's lacrosse team (2-2) played tenacious full-field defense to limit its opponent's scoring opportunities on a blustery Chicago afternoon against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars (5-0) on Thursday, but a first-half spurt for the Cougars proved enough to hold on for a win as the Duhawks dropped the nonconference matchup, 10-6.
Concordia Chicago jumped ahead to an early 3-0 lead in the first ten minutes, but
Katlynne Wolf helped get the offense rolling for the Duhawks, finding
Clare Brunn inside the eight meter for a goal with just under 18 minutes left in the half. The Cougars came back to build a 7-1 lead throughout the remainder of the half until
Marianne Gleason scored with 3:22 left on the clock off an assist by
Hannah Medina to stop the Cougars' run.
Loras' full-field defensive efforts kept Concordia Chicago off the board to start the second half and neither team was able to find the momentum until the 15 minute mark when Brunn gave the Duhawks the spark on offense with a goal off the deflected shot by Medina. The Cougars called a time out to regroup but Wolf kept it going for the Duhawks on offense coming out the break, picking up another deflected shot to capitalize with the goal and cutting the Cougars' lead to three with just under 14 minutes left to play.
Loras continued to challenge Concordia Chicago in the midfield and strong goalkeeping by
Lydia Phelps kept the Cougars scoreless for nearly five minutes, but the home team hit a late second half run, scoring three-straight goals to lead 10-4 with 7:15 left in the game. With 2:27 left, Gleason notched her second goal of the game to help the Duhawks close out the game with a 2-0 run followed by a goal for Brunn, grabbing her own ground ball off a missed free-position shot, but the Cougars held on for a 10-6 win.
Brunn led all scorers with three goals while Gleason added two and Wolf scored one.
Kayla Tilkes had a stellar defensive performance, helping to limit the Cougars' opportunities on offense with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers along with seven saves by Phelps.
Loras will play one more non-conference matchup before starting Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) play on Wednesday, Apr. 24, hosting the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Game time at the Rock Bowl is set for 5 P.M.
